Tye Ruotolo and Christian Lee went eyes-locked in Bangkok ahead of ONE: The Inner Circle 37, and the challenger has spent fight week promising to make this short. Ruotolo, 2-0 as a pro, meets Lee in Friday’s main event at Lumpinee Stadium, with the card streaming at 6:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET) on Nov. 6. ONE Championship and BJPenn.com bill it as a defense of Lee’s ONE lightweight MMA world title, while MMA Fighting described it as the welterweight strap. Whatever the label, a 23-year-old is fighting for MMA gold in his third pro bout.
He wanted it that way. Ruotolo told MMA Fighting he never pitched himself to ONE boss Chatri Sityodtong as a project needing a long runway. “I don’t want to fight people I know I can win,” he said. “I don’t want to fight the taxi cab drivers, you know? I want to fight the best in the world, so I’m looking forward to it.”
His résumé so far backs up the appetite. Ruotolo debuted against Adrian Lee, Christian’s younger brother, at ONE Fight Night 35 in September 2025 and choked him out. Two months later he tapped Shozo Isojima, who came in 6-0, inside of a round. Both finishes came by rear-naked choke, and both earned him a US$50,000 performance bonus, per BJPenn.com. He hasn’t competed in MMA in almost a year. On the grappling side, he holds IBJJF Worlds and WNO titles plus ONE’s welterweight submission grappling belt, and he has beaten MMA fighters Reinier de Ridder, Marat Gafurov and Vagner Rocha on the mats.

Lee is a different animal under ONE rules. MMA Fighting calls him a two-division champion, and BJPenn.com counts 17 finishes among his 18 career wins, including a stoppage of Alibeg Rasulov in their rematch last November. He has been submitted exactly once in MMA, by Martin Nguyen in 2016. ONE spent Thursday reposting his comeback win over Kiamrian Abbasov, which tells you how the promotion wants you to see him. Lee has framed this one as payback for Adrian and has questioned whether Ruotolo has the experience for a five-round fight.
Ruotolo shrugged that off. “I’m sure Christian’s got a lot of pressure because it’s on him. He’s got to avenge his little bro and all that, right?” he told BJPenn.com.

His scouting report is blunt. He expects Lee to come out hunting a first-round knockout with big kicks and punches, then chop at his legs and wait for his chin to rise if the early storm doesn’t land. Asked to grade Lee’s grappling on a scale where heavyweight Robelis Despaigne is a one and Gordon Ryan or the Ruotolos sit at 10, he landed on a five or six. “It could arrive in the first round, or it could come in the second. It’s going to end quick,” Ruotolo said, adding that a submission is the most likely ending.
A win makes him the first ONE World Champion in both submission grappling and MMA. He told MMA Fighting he plans to defend both, with a ONE jiu-jitsu title defense targeted for December or January and the CJI on his calendar next year.

My take: asking for Adrian Lee as a debut opponent was the gutsiest matchmaking request I’ve seen from a grappler crossing over, and he cashed it. The worry is the one Ruotolo named himself. He walks forward, and Lee kicks hard to the legs, so 10 minutes of that could turn Lee’s five-round question into the whole story by Round 3. But Ruotolo has never needed more than a round, and if this hits the canvas early, I’m not betting against his forearm sliding under Lee’s chin.
