Michael Chandler’s first night in WWE ended with him flat on the mat. The UFC lightweight worked as special guest referee for an unsanctioned match between Dion Lennox and Cruz Montana on NXT on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and at one point he got launched clear across the ring by Lennox. The clip spread quickly on social media, with Bloody Elbow and MMA Junkie both posting the footage the next day.
According to Bloody Elbow, the moment came while Lennox was working Montana over in a corner. Chandler moved in to break it up, and Lennox shoved him the full length of the ring. Chandler sold it like he’d been doing this for years. He bounced back to his feet and the two men went face to face, a tense standoff that Bloody Elbow suggested could be the seed of a future storyline. WWE’s official account posted the clip with the caption “Dion Lennox just SWATTED @MikeChandlerMMA away!! 😬”
None of this came out of nowhere. Chandler had been hyping the appearance on X in the days before the show, telling fans to “Tune in for the chaos.” He also revealed back in the summer of 2025 that he’d held talks with WWE boss Triple H, and Bloody Elbow reported that his comments at the time suggested Triple H has real interest in seeing him compete in matches, beyond cameo work.

Where his fight career stands
The timing matters because Chandler’s run inside the Octagon has gone sideways. The former Bellator champion and former UFC lightweight title challenger was knocked out by Mauricio Ruffy at the White House card this past June. That was his sixth loss in eight UFC fights and stretched his current skid to four straight. He’s 40 now, and Bloody Elbow noted that many in the sport believe it’s time for him to step away from the cage, pointing to the damage he consistently absorbs in his fights.
There’s no next UFC fight on the books in the sources, and Chandler hasn’t announced a retirement.
If he does make the jump, he’d be following a path that’s been walked before. Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey both built successful WWE careers after their time in the UFC, and Daniel Cormier has also worked a WWE event as special guest referee.

My take: this is the most natural fit in combat sports. Chandler has spent his entire UFC tenure cutting post-fight promos that sound like they were written for a wrestling crowd, and the way he took that bump (full commitment, popped right back up, straight into Lennox’s face) tells you he’s been thinking about this for a while. After four losses in a row, I’d much rather watch him eat choreographed shoves from Dion Lennox than real left hands from another top-10 lightweight. The face-off is the detail to watch. If NXT books Chandler vs. Lennox, that’s your answer about where his next few years are headed.
