Michael Chandler Is Bringing 'Chaos' to WWE NXT After Four Straight UFC Losses

The 40-year-old lightweight works as special enforcer for Dion Lennox vs. Cruz Montana's unsanctioned match Wednesday night, and it's still on even though Montana just got called up to Raw.

Michael Chandler is officially stepping between the ropes. The UFC lightweight will serve as special enforcer for the unsanctioned match between Dion Lennox and Cruz Montana on the November 4 episode of WWE NXT, which airs Wednesday at 8/7c on The CW and the ESPN Unlimited app.

Chandler spent Monday night hyping it on X across three posts. “Tune in for the chaos!” he wrote, quoting WWE’s announcement of Montana’s move to the main roster. In another post he joked that Montana’s promotion explained why they “needed to bring me in for more muscle” for the match.

That call-up nearly scrambled the booking. Shawn Michaels congratulated Montana on X for jumping to the main roster and said 19 NXT talents have moved up to Raw and SmackDown in the last 12 months. NXT general manager Robert Stone then posted that the Lennox match “WILL still go on this WEDNESDAY” with Chandler as enforcer, even after Montana’s Raw debut.

How Chandler landed the gig

As Bloody Elbow reported, Chandler set this up himself with an Instagram video pitching his services. He argued that someone needed to keep order between two guys who clearly want to hurt each other, and closed with this: “if you need somebody to keep a little order inside the chaos, you need somebody who is well-versed in the language of chaos and if you need somebody, you just let me know, because I know a guy.”

Stone posted a video taking him up on it. Chandler’s response on X: “It’s set in stone!!!! Not a better man for the job no one is more unsanctioned than me.”

He isn’t brand new to a WWE broadcast. He got mic time on Raw in 2024 and used it to call out Conor McGregor. He also said last year that he’d had contract talks with WWE. This is the first time he’ll be involved in an actual match, though.

The show itself is bigger than a normal Wednesday. NXT is going head-to-head with AEW’s annual Blood & Guts event, and the episode will also feature appearances from John Cena and Cody Rhodes.

Where his fighting career stands

The Octagon side is rougher. Chandler is 2-6 since signing with the UFC six years ago, and his most recent loss earlier this year was his fourth in a row. One of those came at UFC Freedom 250, where Mauricio Ruffy knocked him out. Paddy Pimblett also has a win over him. Chandler didn’t hint at retirement after that fourth loss, per Bloody Elbow, but no next fight has been announced. Some fans on Bloody Elbow’s reader forum have openly called for the UFC to cut him.

My take: this is the most natural casting WWE has done in a while. Chandler has always fought like a guy who’d rather be in a brawl than win a chess match, and he cuts a promo like he’s been rehearsing in the mirror since Bellator. Wrestling rewards exactly that. It doesn’t fix the 2-6, and at 40 he owes himself some honesty about what comes next in the cage. For one Wednesday night, though, he gets to be the toughest man in the building without taking a single shin to the head. Watch where Stone positions him once Lennox and Montana start throwing chairs.
