Michael Chandler Talked His Way Into a WWE Match, and It's Unsanctioned

The UFC lightweight will be special guest enforcer for Dion Lennox vs. Cruz Montana on the November 4 episode of NXT, which goes head to head with AEW's Blood & Guts.

Michael Chandler has his first official WWE job. The UFC lightweight will be the special guest enforcer for the unsanctioned match between Dion Lennox and Cruz Montana on the November 4 episode of NXT, Bloody Elbow reported.

Chandler pretty much booked himself. In an Instagram video aimed at NXT general manager Robert Stone, he pointed out that Stone seemed to want the Lennox and Montana feud finished without owning the fallout. Then he made his pitch. If Stone needed someone to keep order, Chandler said, he should find somebody “well-versed in the language of chaos,” and he happened to know a guy.

Stone didn’t play hard to get. He fired back on X with “Your making this too easy for me @MikeChandlerMMA” (his grammar, not mine), and a follow-up video from Stone made it official.

Chandler’s reply on X: “It’s set in stone!!!! Not a better man for the job no one is more unsanctioned than me.”

The timing matters. NXT is WWE’s developmental brand, but this episode is getting the big-show treatment because it runs directly against AEW’s annual Blood & Guts. WWE is also bringing in John Cena and Cody Rhodes to juice the rating on The CW. Chandler is part of the arsenal for a ratings fight.

He has been circling this for a while. Chandler worked the mic on a live episode of Raw in 2024 and used the airtime to call out Conor McGregor. Last year he said he’d had contract talks with WWE. Wednesday is the first time he’ll actually be involved in a match.

The Octagon side of the ledger is rougher. Chandler is 40, and Bloody Elbow has him at 2-6 since he signed with the UFC six years ago. He took his fourth straight loss earlier this year. He didn’t hint at retirement afterward, though, so this reads like a side gig, not a farewell tour. His recent run includes being on the wrong end of a ground-and-pound beating from Paddy Pimblett, a result Pimblett still lists among his UFC finishes.

The lightweight picture he’d be trying to climb back into is crowded. Justin Gaethje holds the undisputed title after upsetting Ilia Topuria at UFC White House in June. Topuria, No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan and featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski have all floated themselves as Gaethje’s first challenger when he returns in 2027. None of that runs through a guy on a four-fight skid.

Which is why the WWE lane makes sense. Chandler has always been at his best with a microphone and a little bit of mayhem, and “special guest enforcer” is a role built for a guy who can talk a crowd into a frenzy and plausibly throw a real right hand. Stone handed him an unsanctioned match on a night WWE is trying to win a ratings war. That’s a matchmaker booking chaos, and I’m in. My bet is Chandler doesn’t stay a neutral party past the opening bell on Wednesday, November 4.
