Fury FC Champ Takes UFC Call on Four Days' Notice With Bashi's Contract on the Line

Carlos Calderon replaces the injured Lucas Brennan at UFC Vegas 124, and Austin Bashi walks in at 1-2 in the Octagon on the final fight of his deal.

Carlos Calderon defended his Fury FC featherweight title in October and had a January 2027 date lined up with undefeated Dimitri Jioev (8-0). Instead he’s headed to Las Vegas. The UFC has signed Calderon to face Austin Bashi this Saturday, Nov. 7, at UFC Vegas 124 inside Meta Apex, with four days to get ready.

Bashi was supposed to fight Lucas Brennan until Brennan suffered a complete ACL tear and pulled out. Marcel Dorff first reported the replacement on X. Nolan King then confirmed it with the promotion, and MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck confirmed the matchup through sources with knowledge of it. According to Bloody Elbow, the Jioev fight is off now that Calderon has the UFC deal.

Calderon confirmed the news himself on his Instagram Story. “God makes no mistakes in his timing,” he wrote. “Lord give me strength as I step into this next chapter.” Then he added: “It’s MY MF time.”

Two featherweights, very different pressure

Calderon (11-4, 1 NC) arrives hot. The 31-year-old won the Fury FC belt by choking out longtime UFC veteran Damon Jackson with a rear-naked choke in Round 4, then held onto it last month with a five-round unanimous decision over Lorram Esteves. He’s on a three-fight win streak and has gone 5-1 across his last six. Six of his 11 wins have come by submission, part of a 73 percent finishing rate.

Bashi (14-2) is the one carrying the weight here. When he earned his contract on Season 8 of Dana White’s Contender Series in 2024, the 25-year-old was widely considered one of the best prospects in the United States. The Octagon has been rougher. Christian Rodriguez handed him his first pro loss in his UFC debut. He bounced back with a first-round submission of John Yannis, then dropped a unanimous decision to Jose Delgado at UFC Oklahoma City in July. That leaves him 1-2 in the promotion, and MMA Mania reports Saturday is the last fight on his current contract. A third loss in four UFC appearances could put his spot in serious danger.

The fight sits on the prelims, which start at 5 p.m. ET on Paramount+. It’s one of several late changes to this card. Sean Brady withdrew from the original headliner against Gabriel Bonfim (Bloody Elbow cited a staph infection), so Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Johnny Walker now meet in a short-notice heavyweight main event. Strawweights Tatiana Suarez and Virna Jandiroba hold down the co-main.

Quick take

This is my favorite kind of booking, a regional champ who just went 25 minutes in October getting thrown in with a former blue-chip prospect who can’t afford to lose. Calderon has nothing to protect. Bashi has a contract to save and spent his camp preparing for a different man. Four days’ notice usually means a gas tank question, but Calderon answered part of that against Esteves five weeks ago. If this hits the mat and Calderon finds a back, Bashi’s UFC future gets decided on a Saturday afternoon prelim at the Apex.
