Conor McGregor went to a Hype Fighting event in Rome this week and more or less told everybody that his final UFC fight is an exit interview. He has one bout left on the deal. He said he’s going to “lay down my gloves in that Octagon for my final UFC contract,” and then he wants to fight bare knuckle for BKFC, the promotion he bought into in 2024. He also offered this little gem about the damage: “Teeth come and go, just like a nose.”
That’s a great line for a T-shirt. It’s a bad line from a guy you’re about to put money on.
I’ll make a prediction, and I’ll label it as one. Whenever the UFC books that last fight, and McGregor has previously pointed at International Fight Week in July 2027, the public is going to bury the window in McGregor tickets. Casual bettors bet names. They bet the guy they remember from the posters, and books adjust to the flow because books aren’t charities. He’ll open at a number that already assumes the old McGregor shows up, and the line will get shorter from there. When it does, I’m on the other side.

The numbers on the comeback
Start with the actual cage time, because it’s ugly. McGregor snapped his leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. His planned return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29, 2024 fell apart when he hurt his toe. When he finally came back on July 11, 2026 against Max Holloway at UFC 329, after five years out, his knee gave way while he was throwing a kick, and the fight was over by TKO in Round 1. Bloody Elbow put it at 69 seconds. The diagnosis was ACL and meniscus damage, followed by surgery.
Add that up. If he fights next July, McGregor will have spent about six years with 69 seconds of Octagon work on his ledger since the Poirier fight. His last two fights both ended with his own leg failing him. He’s 38. He’s 22-7 overall and 10-5 in the UFC, and the most recent entries on that record aren’t trending toward “lay the chalk.”
Then look at the calendar. McGregor told MMA Fighting he’s “ahead of the curve” and that recovery takes nine to 12 months, adding “In nine, you’ll get cleared.” His longtime coach John Kavanagh told Ariel Helwani something more sober: “I guess it’ll be next year before he can start returning to, obviously, you know, MMA-type training.” So the realistic version is a reconstructed knee, a camp that starts sometime in 2027, and a target date in July. That’s a tight window for a fighter who hasn’t put together a clean camp and a clean fight night in a very long time.
Dana White, who has every financial reason to sell you a McGregor comeback, didn’t even bother. “When you’re his age and you’ve taken five years off, Father Time is undefeated,” he said, and he won’t discuss what’s next until a doctor clears McGregor for full training. When the promoter is the pessimist, listen.

The best case for Conor, and why it doesn’t pay
The strongest argument for McGregor goes like this: the Holloway fight told us nothing, it was a freak knee injury 69 seconds in, Holloway didn’t outclass him, and McGregor’s left hand still ends nights with one clean shot.
Fair. Now look at what you’re buying. A fight that tells you nothing is still information, because the body broke before the opponent had to solve anything. Two fights in a row, the leg went first. A one-punch path to victory is real, but it requires a base underneath it, and the base is the part that keeps getting surgery. You’d be paying a favorite’s premium for a puncher’s chance.
Do the price math. A -250 favorite implies roughly a 71% win probability. Ask yourself honestly whether a 38-year-old on a rebuilt ACL, with 69 seconds of cage time across six years, wins that fight seven times out of 10. I’ve lost money on dumber ideas (I keep the slips in a shoebox as a form of therapy), but I’m not losing it on this one.
There’s also the head. McGregor is openly telling people bare knuckle excites him more right now. He even admitted, “maybe I’m just saying this because I had a bad time out the last time.” The final UFC fight is the contract obligation. BKFC is the thing he owns a piece of and keeps talking about. MMA Fighting’s Morning Report went further, guessing he boxes Jake Paul before he ever gets to BKFC. Either way, the Octagon isn’t where his attention is pointed.

If the opponent is Holloway, which is the fight both men have floated and the UFC hasn’t announced, you’re also asking McGregor to beat a guy who already stood across from this exact version of him and left with his hand raised. McGregor won their first meeting in 2013. A lot of birthdays have passed since then, and most of them were McGregor’s.
When the line opens, write the number down. Check it again fight week. The gap between those two prices is the casual tax, and in July 2027 I plan on collecting it.
