Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez Are Down to Two Cities for February With Floyd Lurking

DAZN says it's New York City or Las Vegas, and it comes days after Garcia announced he'd agreed to fight a 49-year-old Floyd Mayweather for his WBC belt.

DAZN reported Sunday that Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez are headed to either New York City or Las Vegas in February. The talk has moved past whether anybody would watch this and on to which city gets the bag. For now, that’s the entire public picture: two cities and one month. No date, no venue, no announced weight or title, and no signed paperwork anyone has shown off. Treat this as a fight in serious discussion until somebody books a press conference.

The timing is hilarious, because Garcia spent the last week telling everyone with Wi-Fi that he’s fighting Floyd Mayweather.

The Floyd Detour

On Oct. 21, Garcia, the reigning WBC welterweight champion, said he’d been on FaceTime with Mayweather. Then he went to X and posted, “Trust me at first I thought this was bullsh*t,” before insisting it was real. According to Garcia, he and Floyd agreed to fight at 147 for the WBC welterweight championship, which he pitched as 50-0 against the current champ. On Instagram he doubled down: “It’s real and he wants to do a real fight at 147.”

MMA Mania reported the Mayweather fight would land at some point in 2027 and isn’t official. That didn’t stop BetOnline.ag from opening a line anyway, with Garcia at -400 and Mayweather at +300. That makes sense when you look at the birth certificate. Mayweather is 49, his last exhibition was two years ago, and his last real fight was the win over Conor McGregor almost a decade back.

The WBC isn’t slamming the door. President Mauricio Sulaiman told Hard Rock Bet, “If Floyd Mayweather passes all the examinations, if Floyd Mayweather gets a license from a boxing commission where the fight is to be taking place, the WBC will certainly support Floyd Mayweather.” He compared it to the comebacks of Sugar Ray Leonard against Hagler and Manny Pacquiao against Barrios.

Eddie Hearn added some gasoline too. MiddleEasy reported Hearn said he understands the fight is on, and he’s picking Mayweather to win. So the promoter of half of boxing is siding with the guy getting +300 odds. That’s either a hot take or a guy who has watched Floyd make people miss for 30 years.

So What’s the Order?

Put the reports side by side and Garcia’s calendar looks like this: Lopez in February in New York or Vegas, then Mayweather sometime in 2027, assuming both deals survive the lawyers. Neither fight has been officially announced, and nothing in the reporting says whether Garcia’s WBC belt would be on the line against Lopez.

Here’s my take. I’m all in on this version of Ryan Garcia. He’s out here calling his shots in public and lining up a fight with a real name in February, while dangling a 50-0 legend as dessert for 2027. That’s how you run a career when you have tens of millions of followers and a belt. The Lopez fight is the one that actually means something in a boxing sense. The Floyd fight is the one that’ll print money, and I’ll be first in line for both press conferences because neither of these guys has ever met a microphone he didn’t want to fight. If I’m picking the city, give me New York. Vegas gets every big fight. A Garcia vs. Lopez week in Manhattan in February would be pure chaos, and I want front-row seats for the face-off.
