Alexander Volkanovski just finished Movsar Evloev, and his next breath went to an exit plan. After keeping his featherweight belt at UFC 333 on Oct. 24, the champ said he’d move up and fight Justin Gaethje, then walk away no matter what happens. Championship Rounds posted his comments on X:
“I don’t want to hold divisions up, but I believe we could do this and not hold the divisions up.
That’s something I’d retire for. If they want to give me that opportunity, win or lose I’d retire.”

Win or lose. That’s a 29-4 champion with nothing left to prove offering the UFC a clean, gift-wrapped retirement fight. Most guys at the end of the road beg for one more title shot. Volkanovski is pitching a farewell tour with a lightweight wrecking ball on the poster.
The resume behind the ask is absurd. Volkanovski is the No. 1 featherweight, a two-time UFC featherweight champion, the first Australian-born fighter to win a UFC title, and the owner of the most featherweight title wins in UFC history. He became the oldest man to win the 145-pound belt at 36, and the Evloev finish in Round 2 made him the oldest to defend it at 38. Fight Matrix has him as the second-greatest featherweight ever.

Gaethje is the opponent you pick when you want people to remember your last night. He’s the current UFC lightweight champion at 28-5, ranked No. 1 at 155, and he became the oldest fighter to win the lightweight title at 37. He has five bouts named Fight of the Year by multiple outlets, 17 post-fight bonuses in 16 UFC appearances, and a record 11 Fight of the Night awards. He last fought on June 14.
The part about keeping both divisions moving matters. Both men hold belts, and Volkanovski’s pitch is basically a superfight that doesn’t freeze either title picture. If he retires after it, featherweight opens up regardless of the result. Whether Gaethje’s belt would be on the line, and whether he wants any part of this, are questions neither man has publicly answered yet.

If the UFC wants a champion-vs-champion send-off between two 1988 babies who refuse to slow down, Volkanovski just put the contract on the table. Now it’s Gaethje’s move.
