Dan Hooker Deletes Gruesome Injury Clip Less Than a Month Before Facing Brian Ortega

The video showed The Hangman nursing a nasty lip cut in his car, and it surfaced as he tries to snap a three-fight skid on November 21 in Qatar.

Dan Hooker posted a video of a gruesome-looking cut on his lip and then pulled it down shortly after, with less than a month to go before his scheduled fight with Brian Ortega at UFC Qatar on November 21. Bloody Elbow reported that the clip was gone from Hooker’s own account but kept circulating after pages like Championship Rounds reposted it on X.

The footage is short. Hooker is sitting in his car, shows off the wound, swears at it and then laughs the whole thing off. Bloody Elbow’s read is that the injury will likely push back his next sparring session. Nobody has said anything about the fight being in jeopardy, and Hooker hasn’t offered an explanation for why the video disappeared.

Timing is what makes this a story. Hooker was stopped by Salahdine Parnasse just last month, his third consecutive loss in the Octagon, and he chose to turn right back around rather than sit. The Ortega fight would be his third appearance of the year. It lands on a card headlined by Jiri Prochazka vs. Navajo Stirling.

Hooker has been unusually candid about how he got here. In April he admitted to “coasting” through fights and said his commitment to training had slipped well below where it used to be. By his own account, the last time he went all in on a camp was for his 2022 fight with Claudio Puelles, which came right after a pair of losses and got him back in the win column. He also confessed to drinking every day while preparing for Mateusz Gamrot, figuring the work he’d banked in earlier years would carry him. It didn’t carry him past Parnasse.

He has also said he understands why fans are asking questions about his future given his current run at lightweight. A fourth straight loss would make those questions a lot louder.

My take: a split lip in camp is about as routine as it gets, and a guy who drinks through one camp and gets his face opened in the next is at least showing up to the hard rooms again. That’s the most encouraging thing in this clip. What worries me is the schedule. He took a stoppage loss last month, he’s fighting again in November, and now there’s a fresh cut on his face with sparring on hold. I’ve lost enough money backing fighters on short rest to know how this usually goes. Lip cuts heal, but they also reopen, and a cut man in Qatar is going to be very interested in that spot if Ortega lands a clean jab early. Watch whether Hooker’s team says anything before fight week. If the line moves toward Ortega in the next 10 days, I’d bet it’s because of this video.
