Tom Nolan stopped Renato Moicano by TKO at 1:28 of Round 3 in the UFC Vegas 123 main event on Saturday night in Las Vegas. He came back after spending most of two rounds with the Brazilian wrapped around his back in a body triangle. Referee Dan Miragliotta waved it off after Nolan reversed a takedown and buried Moicano under ground-and-pound. That came one round after Miragliotta made a standup call in the second that the broadcast booth openly disagreed with.
For eight-plus minutes this was Moicano’s fight. According to Cageside Press, he ducked under a Nolan combination early in Round 1, took the back and locked the body triangle with just over three minutes left. He spent the rest of the frame hunting the rear-naked choke while Nolan worked to stand and fired elbows into his thigh trying to pry the legs loose. Round 2 went the same way. Moicano got a body lock, threw Nolan down and had the triangle back on with more than 3:30 remaining. The crowd booed.
Then Miragliotta reset the fighters on the feet. MMA Fighting called it a bizarre move, and Cageside Press noted the commentary team didn’t agree with it given Moicano’s dominant position. Nolan made it count almost immediately. He landed a knee that dropped Moicano, swarmed from top position, stuffed a desperate leg attack and kept punching until the horn.

The third round was Nolan’s from the opening exchange. He landed clean shots upstairs, a heavy body kick and a knee to the head that appeared to hurt Moicano. Moicano still got one more takedown, but Nolan scrambled to the top and didn’t let him out again.
“That’s probably better than I expected,” Nolan said afterward. “I come in here ice cold and I delivered.” He added that Moicano was the opponent he wanted. “Whatever the UFC want to do with me next.”

What it means
The Australian has been treated as a top prospect since he arrived in the UFC, and MMA Fighting called this the signature win on his résumé. The next step is a tougher matchup inside the lightweight top 15. No opponent or date has been announced.
The standup is already the bigger topic online. A popular r/MMA thread argued Moicano was robbed of a position he was actively working from and said a stop like that would never happen to Khamzat Chimaev or Islam Makhachev. Aaron Bronsteter wrote on X that it was a “Great performance that was slightly tainted by that stand up in the second, but Moicano also did not look himself in that fight.”

Quick take: I’ll defend a lot of grappling-heavy fights against the boo birds, and this one didn’t even need defending. Moicano had a body triangle on and was attacking the neck in both rounds, which is about as active as back control gets. Miragliotta’s reset was a bad call, and I’d say that no matter who won. But it didn’t hand Nolan the third round. Between rounds he clearly decided he wasn’t going to sit in the clinch or the front headlock waiting for the body lock, and he opened Round 3 throwing to the body and the head instead. The reversal on Moicano’s last takedown was his own work too. The referee gave Nolan an opening in Round 2. Nolan earned the finish in Round 3 at 1:28.
