Tom Nolan stopped Renato Moicano at 1:28 of Round 3 in the lightweight main event of UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Nolan, the first time Nolan had headlined a card.
That should have been the whole story, a young fighter handed the top slot and walking out with a finish. Instead, a large share of the reaction on X was aimed at the man in the cage who wasn’t throwing punches. Referee Dan Miragliotta stood the fighters up while Moicano was sitting on Nolan’s back, and according to Championship Rounds, Nolan nearly finished Moicano just moments after the restart.
The stand-up
“The ref stood up the fight while Renato Moicano had Tom Nolan’s back,” Championship Rounds (@ChampRDS) wrote, adding, “Nolan almost finished Moicano just moments later… 😬”

Dovy (@DovySimuMMA) was typing in all caps as it happened. “OMG THAT TERRIBLE STAND UP ALMOST GOT MOICANO FINSIHED,” he posted, then quoted himself a few minutes later with a cooler, angrier follow-up: “Shocking refereeing. wtf was he thinking?” When Bovada celebrated Nolan delivering in his first main event, Dovy quote-posted it with a two-line verdict of his own: “❌Referee removed: Dan Miragliotta.”

Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) sounded more stunned than furious. “I can’t believe this. Devastating turn of events for Moicano. Instantly flipped the fight. What are we doing?” he wrote.
The sharpest take came from Jed Meshew (@JedKMeshew), who called it “the worst refereeing I’ve seen in years” and said it had a “Tangible impact on the fight.” Meshew was careful not to take the win away from Nolan entirely. “It’s possible Tom Nolan could’ve done that to Renato Moicano in the third round, but we’ll never know now,” he wrote, which is about as fair as anyone can be about a sequence that changed who was hunting whom.

Credit where it was due
The finish itself got its own wave of posts. ESPN MMA (@espnmma) went with “TOM NOLAN FINISHES RENATO MOICANO IN ROUND THREE 😲,” and Championship Rounds posted nearly the same line alongside the clip. Bovada’s framing, that Nolan “DELIVERS IN HIS FIRST MAIN EVENT,” is the one that will hold up best for him over time. Main events are long nights, and he was still finishing in the third.

The most graceful post of the night came from the man who lost. Moicano (@moicanoufc) skipped any complaint about the referee and wrote simply: “Congrats ton Nolan you’re a beast!” Hours earlier, UFC Brasil had been hyping his arrival for the headliner on its Portuguese-language feed. Moicano could have spent the night litigating the stand-up, and he picked congratulations instead.
What’s next for Nolan
Nobody in the reactions called Nolan out, and he didn’t name anyone either, at least in what’s been posted so far. That leaves him with a headlining win over a veteran and an asterisk attached by the people who watched the stand-up. Meshew’s “we’ll never know now” is the line that will follow this result around. The cleanest way for Nolan to erase it is a next fight with nobody in stripes doing him any favors.
