Ryan Garcia has added fuel to the Floyd Mayweather rumor. Yahoo Sports reported that Garcia teased a possible fight with the boxing legend in a way the outlet called hilarious. The joke was enough to set off another round of speculation about whether these two could share a ring, either in an exhibition or in a sanctioned bout that counts.
Garcia’s own team has been more careful about it. His adviser, Guadalupe Valencia, told MiddleEasy that a Mayweather fight would have to wait until the availability lines up and other obligations are cleared. Valencia also pointed out that the fight would put an unbeaten record at stake. That’s an adviser keeping the door open while making it clear nobody is walking through it yet.
Nothing about this is close to official. No date has been reported. No venue, no commission and no ruleset either, and that last part matters most. An exhibition and a sanctioned fight are very different products, and so far neither side has said which one they’re talking about.

Mayweather’s phone keeps ringing
Garcia isn’t the only name attached to Mayweather this month. Bloody Elbow noted that Mayweather thinks a rematch with Conor McGregor could still happen, even though Dana White hasn’t shown any interest. So Mayweather has at least two big-money ideas floating around right now, and neither one has a contract behind it.
The demand for veterans is real, though, and Manny Pacquiao is the proof. Bloody Elbow reported that the 47-year-old is set to return December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on the Netflix-streamed Fury vs. Joshua card. Joe Cordina looks like the logical opponent for now. Ireland’s Paddy Donovan, a former IBF welterweight title challenger, also said on Total Boxing with Tris Dixon that his manager, Keith Sullivan, has been talking with Pacquiao’s team. Donovan admitted his chances are slim. “Look, it’s a long shot. It’d be great,” he said. Pacquiao hasn’t won a fight since his split decision over Keith Thurman in 2019, and promoters are still lining up anyway.
The Mayweather name has been showing up on the MMA side too. TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter compared a bantamweight contender to him on X this weekend: “Petr Yan is the Floyd Mayweather of MMA.” He described Yan as someone who is “great defensively, lulls opponents into a false sense of security, downloads the information and weaponizes it to win down the stretch.” That’s about as good a short description of the Mayweather style as you’ll find, and it says a lot about how much his name still means to fight fans of every kind.
Quick take
I enjoy Garcia trolling, and he’s good at it, but a joke plus a cautious adviser doesn’t add up to a fight. Valencia’s comments read like a camp that wants the headlines without making any promises, which is smart business. If this does happen, I want it sanctioned with real stakes and a real result on both records. Another exhibition with an asterisk would feel like a letdown. Until someone names a date, the only confirmed comeback of a legend on the calendar is Pacquiao in Cardiff on December 11.
