Canelo Alvarez is in Riyadh, and he didn’t come alone. Turki Alalshikh posted the arrival on X early Monday GMT, writing in Arabic and English that the Mexican champion had landed in the Saudi capital alongside world champion Oleksandr Usyk. The hashtag tacked onto the end, #CaneloMbilli, told you exactly why he’s there. Al Arabiya English reported later Monday that Canelo says he’s ready for Saturday’s fight against Christian Mbilli, set for October 31 in Riyadh.
Why Usyk made the trip is anyone’s guess. Alalshikh’s post doesn’t explain it, and nobody has said publicly. Seeing the two of them come through together on the same post is a fun visual, though, and it’ll fuel plenty of speculation this week.
The fight nobody outside Riyadh wants to call safe
This fight week is happening under a cloud. MMA Mania reported over the weekend that there’s growing pressure to reschedule the Canelo card as the war in the Middle East intensifies. Houthi forces have continued attacking sites inside Saudi Arabia with missiles, bombs and drones, and King Khalid International Airport has been hit multiple times and labeled a legitimate target by the Houthi military. Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment Initiative, the conference nicknamed “Davos in the Desert,” has already been pushed to next year.

Alalshikh hasn’t budged. According to MMA Mania, he has said Canelo fears nothing and the fight will go ahead as planned. Canelo stepping off a plane in Riyadh five days out is about as loud an answer as you can give.
TKO is holding the same line. Speaking after UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi, Dana White said he has never felt at risk in the region. “I can tell you, never have I been over here where I felt unsafe and felt that my staff were unsafe,” White said. Asked what he’d tell other leagues weighing events there, he kept it simple: “We go. We go. When we have a deal, we have a contract, we have a date, we’ll be there.” WWE Crown Jewel is booked for Riyadh on November 7, UFC Qatar follows on November 21, and UFC Saudi Arabia lands December 5. MMA Mania also noted reports that the Trump administration is preparing to escalate its war with Iran after the November 3 midterms, and Iran has struck both Saudi Arabia and Qatar before.
One door closed for good
Canelo heads into Mbilli with one long-running storyline officially dead. David Benavidez told Brian Custer on “The Last Stand Podcast” that he’s done chasing the fight. “I can say with confidence that fight is never going to happen,” Benavidez said. “I don’t want to keep calling someone out who doesn’t want to fight.” He still called Canelo a legend. Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) now holds the WBA and WBO cruiserweight belts and meets WBC interim champ Michal Cieslak (28-2-1) on December 5 in Phoenix. Usyk sits on the hit list Benavidez recently put out, which makes Monday’s travel photo a little spicier.

Canelo’s last stretch of big nights included the Terence Crawford fight at Allegiant Stadium on September 13, 2025, where Alalshikh and White sat cageside together.
Here’s my take. The war is real, the airport strikes are real, and nobody should pretend otherwise. But the fighter at the center of all this flew in, said he’s ready and brought a heavyweight world champion with him. That’s the clearest signal yet that this card goes off on October 31 unless something changes on the ground. Mbilli gets the biggest night of his career either way, and I want to see him walk in like he believes it.
