Ryan Garcia has picked a date and told Floyd Mayweather to meet him there or get out of the way. According to MiddleEasy, Garcia says he will fight on February 6 whether or not a deal with Mayweather is finalized. He issued a new written warning about where their negotiations stand. If the terms don’t come together soon, the February date stays on the calendar and somebody else gets the call.
That’s about as specific as Garcia got. There’s no named backup opponent in the reporting and no venue. The only firm detail is the date. That date is the leverage, though. Garcia isn’t waiting on Mayweather’s schedule. He’s set a deadline and made Mayweather’s camp decide against it.
Garcia is coming into this with a belt and a loud October. He’s the WBC welterweight champion, and his most recent big result was a win over Conor Benn. Benn is now sorting through his own return after that loss, and Bloody Elbow posted his reaction to rumors that Conor McGregor could be his next opponent. Garcia has also spent the week claiming he deserves Fighter of the Year, and that went over badly with the people he’d be beating for it.

O’Shaquie Foster laughed it off in comments shared by Ariel Helwani on X, and he didn’t hide the shot at how Garcia won his belt. “He found the easy route to get the title, I feel like. I’ve been taking the hard route for years now,” Foster said. He pointed to his own year against an ex-world champion, a unified champion and Navarrete, and added, “It’s not even close.” Terence Crawford also dismissed Garcia’s claim in an X reply on October 28, MiddleEasy reported.
If Mayweather walks, Garcia has options. The welterweight title picture is packed right now. Devin Haney, the WBO champ at 33-0-1, meets IBF titleholder Liam Paro (28-1) on December 19 in San Francisco, according to a Ring Magazine report cited by MMA Mania. Teofimo Lopez holds the WBA super belt, Jack Catterall has the WBA regular title, and The Ring belt is vacant. That’s a lot of names a WBC champion could plausibly line up for early 2027 without needing anyone named Mayweather.

My take is that this is the smartest thing Garcia has done all month, and I say that as someone who’s watched plenty of “ongoing talks” between famous people slowly die. Putting a date in writing changes the conversation. He stops asking whether the fight happens and starts asking whether Mayweather wants to be the guy standing across from him on February 6. The Fighter of the Year campaign is noise. Foster and Crawford are right that the résumé argument is thin. A firm date with a sitting champion attached is real, though, and it’s the kind of thing that moves a negotiation. Watch December 19. If Haney or Paro comes out of San Francisco looking good, Garcia suddenly has a backup with a belt, and Mayweather’s camp has a lot less room to stall.
