Jean Silva says the UFC has already talked to him about a featherweight title fight and invited him to Abu Dhabi. By his own account, the final call belongs to Alexander Volkanovski.
Silva’s comments made the rounds on r/MMA on Friday. He didn’t sound like a guy waiting politely by the phone. He went straight at the people arguing he hasn’t earned the shot, and he drew a clear line between the champion passing on him and the idea that he isn’t deserving.
Silva said he won’t accept people claiming he isn’t next. If Volkanovski doesn’t want the fight, Silva said, that’s a separate matter, but he rejected any suggestion that he hasn’t earned it.

That’s about as straight an answer as you’ll get from a contender in this sport. He skipped the begging, and he skipped calling the champ scared. By his telling, the paperwork is Volk’s to sign and the debate about whether he belongs is over.
The Champion Has Other Plans
The timing is awkward for Silva, because Volkanovski spent the same week talking about leaving the division. In comments to Ariel Helwani, Volkanovski said he would give up the featherweight belt and move up to fight Arman Tsarukyan for the lightweight title if Justin Gaethje retires.
“I’ll vacate the featherweight belt and fight Arman for the title. There it is,” Volkanovski said. He added: “If Gaethje doesn’t wanna [fight Arman], I’ll do it. That excites me.”

That’s a conditional, and it hangs on a retirement nobody has announced. MMA Fighting was already polling readers Thursday on whether they want Volkanovski vs. Tsarukyan, which tells you how fast the idea caught on.
Volkanovski also has the leverage to back up Silva’s read that the decision sits with the champ. Estimated fighter salaries for UFC 333 circulated this week, and he topped the list with a reported $1.18 million payday. A champion earning that much gets a say in what he does next.
At least Silva got a conversation. Heavyweight Alexander Volkov told Helwani he walked into the UFC 333 press conference through the regular gates like a fan after being left off the dais again, then asked Dana White what he has to do to get a title fight. Volkov said there was no answer, and he joked that White probably confuses the two of them: “I bet every time he hears my name, he thinks they’re talking about Alexander Volkanovski.”

What’s Next
Nothing is signed. Silva hasn’t said anything about a date, a bout agreement or what the Abu Dhabi trip actually involves beyond the invite itself. Volkanovski hasn’t publicly responded to Silva, and his lightweight idea depends on Gaethje’s decision.
Silva is right to plant his flag now. If Volkanovski goes chasing Tsarukyan, the featherweight belt becomes a vacant title, and vacant belts go to whoever was loudest and closest to the front of the line when the music stopped. Silva just made sure the UFC heard him before it starts sorting out that line.
