Robert Whittaker Says Other Names Had Excuses Before Bogdan Guskov Took Sydney Fight

The former middleweight champ is moving up to 205 pounds for his hometown return, and he admits a 6'3 light heavyweight's punch is going to hurt.

Robert Whittaker is going up to 205 pounds, and he’s doing it in front of the home crowd. The former UFC middleweight champion will fight Bogdan Guskov at UFC Sydney, a booking Bloody Elbow posted on X on Tuesday as the latest bout added to the card. The outlet billed it as Whittaker’s light heavyweight return.

Whittaker broke down the matchup on his MMArcade Podcast. He sounded like a guy who has spent some time thinking about what a bigger man’s right hand actually costs.

“I’ve climbed every mountain. I’ve done a lot of stuff, had a lot of battles and wars, and now I’m coming back to Sydney, older, more mature, heavier, but just as sharp,” Whittaker said. “I can’t wait to get in there. But Bogdan’s a dangerous guy. He’s tall. He’s rangy. He’s got light heavyweight power. If he gets a shot on me, it’s going to hurt.”

He kept coming back to the size. Whittaker pointed to fighters standing 6’3 and walking around at 110 kilos, and he didn’t pretend the extra weight class is free.

“If light heavyweights hit you, big tall guys, 6’3 guys that weigh 110 kilos, it’s going to hurt,” he said. “The game plan’s the same: hit and don’t get hit. Keep it very simple.”

Then he got to how the booking actually came together. Whittaker said other opponents were floated for Sydney, and that every one of them was either already booked or had a reason he couldn’t do it. He brushed past the details with a “yada yada yada” and gave the credit to the man who said yes.

“And props to Bogdan,” Whittaker said. “Someone took the fight, flying all the way to Sydney to do it. It’s going to be great.”

BJPenn.com, which first relayed the podcast comments, called Whittaker one of Australia’s most successful mixed martial artists and described the Sydney card as his long-awaited return to his hometown. The site also conceded the pairing might not leap off the page for some fans, but framed it as a real measuring stick for Guskov against someone as established as “The Reaper.”

What neither report included was a date for UFC Sydney or the rest of the lineup around this fight, so the full picture of where Whittaker sits on the card is still to come.

My take: Whittaker is giving the most honest prefight answers in the building right now. He’s a former champ admitting out loud that bigger men hit harder and that the plan is just to not get hit. And Guskov is my kind of fighter. A handful of guys had calendar conflicts and excuses, and he got on the long flight to fight the local hero in his own city. If he lands the shot Whittaker is worried about, Sydney goes very quiet. If he doesn’t, Whittaker gets a hometown win and a clear read on whether 205 is a place he can live.
