The UFC has a new main event for Saturday’s Apex card, and nobody involved saw it coming a week ago. Waldo Cortes-Acosta meets Johnny Walker at heavyweight atop UFC Vegas 124 (also billed as UFC Fight Night 293) on Nov. 7 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas, with the main card going at 8 p.m. ET on Paramount+. The original headliner, Sean Brady vs. Gabriel Bonfim, fell apart last week, and the promotion threw this one together to fill the slot.
The betting market has been the most interesting thing about it so far. DraftKings had Cortes-Acosta at -205 and Walker at +170 as of Monday, and Yahoo Sports’ betting column noted that early books opened Walker closer to +240. That’s a big move for a fight that only got booked a few days ago. Usually a main event hangs around for weeks and the sharps beat the number into shape long before fight week. Here the market is doing that work in real time, which is exactly when you can find a soft price.
The Matchup
As far as the Yahoo writer could tell, neither man was in camp for anything, so the short notice cuts both ways. Weight shouldn’t be an issue either. Cortes-Acosta typically weighs in somewhere in the low 260s, and Walker, a former light heavyweight, came in at 242 pounds for his heavyweight debut. Walker also holds more than four inches of reach.

The case for Walker, per that same column, is that Cortes-Acosta rarely grapples, so the size gap matters less, and he’s the slower man on the feet. Walker looked great in his first heavyweight outing, and the writer argued this is close to an ideal opponent for him: someone who won’t hold him down and doesn’t carry the kind of power that tests what he called Walker’s suspect chin. The UFC, for its part, posted Cortes-Acosta’s full fight with Derrick Lewis on YouTube Monday to promote the card.
Early Lines Down the Card
The 13-fight slate is the second straight week at the Apex, and it isn’t stacked with ranked names. Two other spots already have line movement worth watching.

Thomas Petersen (-162) vs. Gabriel Lorenco (+136): Petersen (11-5, 3-4 UFC) steps in on short notice for Alvin “Goozie” Hines in a heavyweight bout. He’s 1-2 in his last three, all three UFC wins have come on the scorecards, and three of his four UFC losses were finishes. Lorenco (6-1) makes his UFC debut after a first-round knockout as an underdog on the Contender Series. BetMGM had Lorenco at +140, and MMA Junkie listed Petersen at -165.
Murtazali Magomedov (-125) vs. Jose Delano (+105): Both are 1-0 in the UFC after winning on the 2025 Contender Series season. Delano went to the judges twice in reasonably competitive fights. Magomedov has spent less than three minutes in the Octagon across his two bouts. He was -115 at DraftKings Monday morning before moving, and 85 percent of Tapology predictions are on him.
MMA Junkie is collecting reader picks through Friday at noon ET.

My quick take: when a line moves 70 cents on a fight that was booked over a weekend, somebody knows something, or at least thinks they do. I’ve been that somebody and I’ve been very wrong. Still, a lanky striker with a reach edge against a heavyweight who won’t wrestle him is a live dog, and +170 is a fair price for that bet. I’d have loved +240. I’d also have loved a 401(k) that didn’t include a 12-favorite parlay from 2019. Petersen as a short-notice favorite after two stoppage losses in three fights looks rich to me, and Lorenco at +140 is the other number I’d circle before Saturday.
