Paddy Pimblett Wants Six Weeks Inside Ilia Topuria's Head on The Ultimate Fighter

Dana White says he loves the idea of the two coaching a season, but he's already hedging on timing.

Paddy Pimblett just pitched the only season of The Ultimate Fighter I’d clear my calendar for. The annoying part is that he’s right about why it would work.

In comments Championship Rounds clipped and posted on X on Oct. 5, Pimblett said he’s down to coach opposite Ilia Topuria, and he described the plan like a guy walking you through a heist he’s already rehearsed. “I’d have his head in the shed for six weeks,” he said. “He wouldn’t know where to look, what to say. I’d have him feeling awkward constantly.” Then he delivered the closer: “Me and Ilia would bring the ratings back to The Ultimate Fighter.”

Is that cocky? Of course it is. It’s Paddy. But read it a second time and look at what he’s promising. The first thing he offers is discomfort, and the fight shows up later. That’s the correct order for a reality show. Nobody remembers the dorm-room grappling sessions. People remember coaches who can’t stand to share a hallway, the stare across the gym, and the moment one of them says something the other can’t answer in time. Pimblett is volunteering to be the guy who makes the room uncomfortable for six straight weeks, and he’s telling you up front that his whole strategy is to get under Topuria’s skin and leave him searching for words on camera.

That’s a villain announcing his evil plan before the first episode airs. I’m in.

The Boss Already Likes It

This isn’t a fantasy draft pick floating around with no traction. Dana White was asked about booking Topuria vs. Pimblett for the next TUF season, and Championship Rounds posted his answer on Oct. 4. “I love the idea of that,” White said, before adding that “a lot of things determine how things play out” and pointing to title fights as part of the equation. He wrapped it with “We’ll see how the timing plays out.”

If you’ve followed Dana for more than a week, you know that answer. It’s a yes with a dentist appointment attached. He likes the show, he likes the matchup, and he isn’t ready to put a date on it because the champion’s schedule is the variable that runs everything.

The Calendar Problem Is Real

Which brings us to the rumor mill, because Topuria’s dance card is already drawing interest. A day after White’s comments, Salahdine Parnasse’s manager addressed talk of a Topuria fight being booked, in remarks shared by mmagangofficiel on Instagram and picked up by Championship Rounds. “If the UFC wants to make Topuria vs Salah happen, it’s a big yes,” the manager said. “But for now, nothing has been signed, and most importantly, nothing is official.”

So that’s a denial, sort of. It’s also a guy loudly holding the door open. And it shows exactly what Pimblett is up against. Every week Topuria isn’t on a TUF set is a week somebody else is lobbying to fight him, and a reality season eats a lot of weeks.

My argument is that the UFC should stop treating TUF as the thing you schedule around title fights and start treating this specific season as the best possible way to sell one. Six weeks of Paddy needling Topuria on television is six weeks of free promotion for a fight that would already be massive. You don’t need a press tour with a coaches’ season like this. The show is the press tour, and it comes with a built-in payoff at the end. That’s the crossover-sized, big-money build I’m always begging promotions to try, and it happens to fix their reality show at the same time.

Fans Already Made the Trailer

Here’s how you know the demand exists: people are already faking it. An account called @cageculture_ posted an AI-generated clip imagining Topuria and Pimblett as TUF coaches, and Dovy Simuskait quote-posted it on Oct. 5 with “ai slop is getting good 😂”. When fans start generating counterfeit episodes of a show that hasn’t been booked, the promotion is leaving money on the table.

Topuria’s name sells even in the rearview mirror. Cage Warriors posted a throwback of him in their cage on Oct. 4 to hype its Spanish card at CW212, airing Nov. 7 on UFC Fight Pass, and asked which Spaniard would follow him from CW to the UFC. When a regional promotion is using you as the poster for an entire country’s pipeline, you’re a draw. Put that draw across from the loudest mouth on the roster and let the cameras roll.

Sportskeeda’s headline on the story says Pimblett also sent a warning to “El Matador.” Fine. Warnings are cheap. What Pimblett is asking for is a six-week stretch where he has to back up every word in front of a camera crew, with Topuria standing three feet away, before they ever touch gloves. That’s a fighter calling his shot. The UFC should hand him the bat and book the season before Parnasse’s manager gets his signature.
