Oscar De La Hoya Throws Cold Water on Ryan Garcia Ever Joining Dana White

De La Hoya doubts Garcia signs with White once his current deal expires and says White isn't "a good fit for him."

Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t see Ryan Garcia landing with Dana White, even after Garcia’s current deal runs out.

Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday that De La Hoya doubts Garcia would sign with White once that contract expires. In his view, White isn’t “a good fit for him.” That short phrase is the only piece of his comments available so far. The fuller reasoning hasn’t surfaced yet, so the details stay thin until the rest of what he said comes out.

It’s a notable thing for De La Hoya to say out loud. Nobody bothers ruling out a suitor unless that suitor is close enough to the door to worry about.

And White is close to a lot of doors in boxing right now. Over the weekend, Championship Rounds posted clips of the UFC boss saying he’ll be in Wales for Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua and that his side will produce and promote the show. Eddie Hearn has said White can’t do that. White didn’t budge.

“I will be there... I’m producing it, I’m promoting it. I’ll see you in Wales,” White said.

That’s the backdrop. A promoter willing to argue with Hearn in public over the biggest heavyweight fight in Britain is a promoter who’ll keep shopping for marquee boxers, and Garcia is the obvious kind of name any new player would want on a poster. De La Hoya is getting out ahead of that conversation before it starts.

What’s missing is just as important. No expiration date for Garcia’s current deal has been reported. White hasn’t been quoted responding to De La Hoya. Garcia himself hasn’t been quoted on any of it. Until one of those three things happens, this is one promoter’s read on another promoter’s chances.

White has his own plate to clear first. He’s still sorting UFC title pictures, he floated Ilia Topuria vs. Paddy Pimblett as a possible Ultimate Fighter coaching matchup (“We’ll see how the timing plays out”), and he’s got a heavyweight fight in Wales he swears is his.

My take: De La Hoya saying a fighter won’t leave is about as binding as a weigh-in staredown. Watch the contract date, not the quotes.
