Joshua Van has his next challenger, and it’s the one flyweight nobody wants to see across the cage right now. The UFC champion will defend his belt against Manel Kape at UFC 336 on January 30 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, with the matchup announced during Saturday’s UFC 333 broadcast from Abu Dhabi. The card streams on Paramount+. The UFC promoted it on X with a simple line: “SOME FIGHTS JUST MAKE SENSE.” Hard to argue.
MMA Junkie has the fight slotted as the co-main event and billed it as a grudge match. Above it on the lineup is Carlos Prates vs. Michael Morales for the interim welterweight title. MMA Fighting’s report, from Damon Martin, described Prates vs. Morales as the co-main instead, so the exact billing order may still shake out.
Van (18-2 MMA, 11-1 UFC) is 25 years old and will be making his third title defense roughly 13 months after winning the belt. The route to the throne was strange. He took a short-notice fight with Brandon Royval, turned it into a Fight of the Year contender, and then won the title when Alexandre Pantoja suffered a freak injury seconds into their first meeting. That’s an asterisk some people were happy to hang on him. He’s spent the time since erasing it. Van beat Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328 in May in another Fight of the Year candidate, then outworked Pantoja over the distance in their UFC 331 rematch in September. Nobody’s talking about the injury anymore.

Kape (23-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) is 32 and finally getting the title shot he’s been circling since he arrived in the UFC. MMA Junkie counts four straight knockout wins, over Bruno Silva, Asu Almabayev, Brandon Royval and Kyoji Horiguchi. MMA Fighting has his run at five straight wins with a finish in every one. The most recent was the Horiguchi fight, which Kape ended by knockout in Round 3. That detail matters. The Royval knockout gives the two men a common opponent, and the Horiguchi stoppage shows Kape’s power holds up deep into a fight.

The opening line is tight. Aaron Bronsteter posted BetOnline odds on X with Van at -125 and Kape at +105, which is about as close as a champion with two defenses can get without being the underdog. Damon Martin wrote on X that the matchup “might be my favorite fight in 2027 and it’s happening in January,” and followed with “That’s gonna be mayhem.”
I’m taking Van. Kape has the sharper single shot in the division right now and he’s earned every bit of this, but Van’s whole reign has been built on out-volume and out-last, and the Pantoja rematch proved he can do it against a five-round veteran who knows every trick. Kape needs one clean moment. Van needs 25 minutes of pressure that never lets him set his feet. At -125, the champion is the value, and I’d be surprised if this one doesn’t produce at least one round the judges have to actually think about.
