Dana White doesn’t think Ian Machado Garry went for the throat. The UFC CEO questioned the Irish welterweight’s killer instinct, MMA Sucka reported, and the line attached to it was about as blunt as a promoter gets about one of his own top contenders: “He had five minutes to change his life.”
That’s the extent of what’s out there so far. The report doesn’t spell out which fight White meant or what else he said, so anyone filling in the rest is guessing. Five minutes is one UFC round, though, and White doesn’t say that about a guy he thinks left everything in the cage.
The comment carries weight because of where Garry sits. The 28-year-old from Portmarnock is ranked No. 2 at welterweight as of June 20, 2026. He’s a former Cage Warriors welterweight champion who opened his UFC run with a first-round knockout of Jordan Williams at UFC 268 in November 2021.

After that, the cards did a lot of the work. Garry beat Darian Weeks, Gabriel Green and Neil Magny by unanimous decision, edged Geoff Neal by split decision at UFC 298 and outpointed Michael Page at UFC 303. His finishes in that stretch came against Song Kenan (a third-round TKO after Garry got dropped in the first) and Daniel Rodriguez (a first-round TKO that earned Performance of the Night).
His first pro loss came at UFC 310 in December 2024, a unanimous decision to Shavkat Rakhmonov in a five-round title eliminator. He bounced back by beating Carlos Prates on the cards in an April 2025 main event. Of his UFC wins through the Prates fight, six of nine went the distance. That’s a winning résumé. It’s also exactly the kind White tends to grumble about when he’s deciding who gets pushed.

White was in a talkative mood around UFC 332. He told new champion Natalia Silva not to sit around waiting for Valentina Shevchenko, and Silva said she’d listen: “I want to be an active champion. It’s time for people to see who I am.” He also floated Ilia Topuria vs. Paddy Pimblett for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter and insisted he’ll be in Wales producing and promoting Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua.
No opponent or date for Garry’s next fight appears in the reporting. When one does, he’ll walk in knowing the boss wants a finish, and a No. 2 contender with the CEO publicly doubting his urgency doesn’t have many ways to answer that besides getting one.
