Dana White Finally Puts a Timeline on Ilia Topuria's Return, and It's Not Soon

White told Jim Rome the UFC is working on Topuria's next fight and expects it to happen in early 2027.

Dana White says the UFC is building Ilia Topuria’s next fight, and the target is early 2027. White said it on The Jim Rome Show, and the clip spread on X Wednesday, Nov. 4, after Championship Rounds posted it.

“He’ll come back in early 2027. We’re working on that,” White said.

That’s the whole update. White didn’t name an opponent or an event, and he gave no date more specific than a season. Early 2027 is a wide target. Counting from a November announcement, my reading is somewhere between two and five months out. If I’ve learned anything from 30 years of watching UFC timelines, it’s that the back end of that estimate tends to win.

Topuria got ahead of his boss by a day. On Nov. 3 he posted a set of photos to Instagram with a caption that Dovy Simu shared on X: “I returned to where it all began. Not to reminisce, but to remember. The Matador is coming back.” Championship Rounds also flagged the post, trimming it to the last line. The account She Loves The Gloves pointed out that the pictures were taken at the Didgori Monument in Georgia, a memorial to the Battle of Didgori, one of the most famous battles in Georgian history. You don’t pick that backdrop by accident. Topuria has a flair for making an entrance before he ever reaches the cage, and the post read like a man clearing his throat on purpose.

He’s also stayed in the conversation while sitting out. Over the weekend, Josh Hokit released a diss track that went after Topuria along with Ciryl Gane, Tom Aspinall, Jon Jones and Alex Pereira, according to Championship Rounds. Derek Brunson quote-tweeted it, laughed it off and added, “Gane in 3 tho.” Topuria hasn’t publicly answered Hokit in the material available here, and that’s probably the right call. If you answer a rap verse, people expect you to write one back.

What comes next depends on the matchmakers. Until the UFC names an opponent and a card, every name you see floated online is speculation, and you should treat it that way.

My take, from the odds desk: I’m not touching a Topuria line until I know who’s across from him and how much cage time he’s lost by fight night. My rule against backing guys at short odds after a long layoff has saved me more money than any pick I’ve ever made. The one time I ignored it, I was out a sandwich budget for two weeks. If the books open Topuria as a heavy favorite against a ranked, active opponent with good cardio, I’ll start looking at the other side, because that’s where the value shows up. White has set the window. Now he needs a name, and I’d guess we get one before the holidays are over.
