Carlos Prates’ coaching team has a short answer for Michael Morales, and it involves a clock. Sherdog reported late Tuesday that Prates’ coach believes Morales won’t make it to Round 3 of their UFC 336 fight, and the outlet framed it on X as a call for an early finish.
The prediction lands on top of Morales’ own shot across the bow. Yahoo Sports ran the warning in its headline: “You’re Gonna Need Those Lungs.” Read plainly, Morales is telling Prates to expect a long night. Prates’ corner is telling Morales it won’t get long enough to matter. Two camps, two very different ideas of how many minutes this fight lasts.
The matchup itself is a good one on paper. Prates (24-7) meets Morales (19-0) at UFC 336 on Jan. 30, according to the fight announcements in MMA Fighting’s Morning Report. The same card features Joshua Van (18-2) against Manel Kape (23-7).

The Makhachev shadow
You can’t talk about this booking without the man who isn’t in it. MMA Fighting’s top stories this week included Islam Makhachev explaining why he turned down a January fight with Prates, Prates calling Makhachev a coward over the UFC 336 withdrawal and vowing to retire him, and Dana White explaining why an interim welterweight title is being introduced while Makhachev is still champion.
Prates hasn’t let it go. Responding to Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz, he said, per a clip posted by Championship Rounds on X: “If [Islam] fights for passion, he would fight the number 1 contender in January. I will not add anything on his legacy, I will finish his legacy brother, and also, he will make me look great. Mark my words.”

The betting crowd sees the two men as nearly interchangeable as Makhachev’s eventual opponent. Championship Rounds shared Polymarket odds on Monday listing Morales at 35% and Prates at 31% to be next for the champion. Prates, for his part, has already started working on Morales directly, posting an edit of him on Instagram, Championship Rounds noted.
My take
I’ll give Prates’ coach this much: if you’re going to talk, talk in rounds, because rounds are checkable. But promising that a 19-0 fighter folds inside 10 minutes is a bold thing to say out loud, and coaches don’t usually get mocked when they’re wrong the way fighters do. Morales’ line about needing those lungs tells you how he sees it going: drag Prates into deep water and see who’s still sharp at the end. That’s the actual fight. Prates’ camp wants it fast, Morales wants it long, and the four-point gap on Polymarket says the people putting money down can’t separate them either. I’d rather watch this than another month of Makhachev discourse, and whoever leaves Jan. 30 with his hand raised will have a far louder case than any Instagram edit can make.
