Quillan Salkilld Bets a Six-Fight Streak on Benoit Saint-Denis in Sydney Main Event

The UFC made it official for Feb. 6, and the matchup pits No. 6 against No. 7 in MMA Mania's lightweight Meta Rankings.

An empty octagon under work lights in a darkened arena before fight night

Quillan Salkilld will headline UFC Sydney against Benoit Saint-Denis on Feb. 6. The promotion announced the lightweight main event on X Tuesday night, billing it as “HIGH STAKES DOWN UNDER” and pointing fans to a presale registration link. The card streams on Paramount+.

The matchup hit r/MMA within about two minutes of the UFC post, and Heavy.com ran with Salkilld as a top prospect earning the headlining slot. That label is starting to look a little small for him. Salkilld carries a six-fight UFC winning streak at lightweight into this one, according to MMA Junkie’s research with UFC stats producer Michael Carroll. That ties Arman Tsarukyan for the longest active run in the division.

Where they sit

MMA Mania’s UFC Meta Rankings, an aggregate list that is separate from the UFC’s official rankings, updated Tuesday. They have Salkilld at No. 6 and Saint-Denis right behind him at No. 7. Above them sit champion Justin Gaethje, then Ilia Topuria, Tsarukyan, Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway and Paddy Pimblett. Below them, Renato Moicano holds No. 8 and Mateusz Gamrot No. 9.

So this is two guys standing next to each other in line, and the winner gets to start eyeballing the names in the top five. The loser goes back to the pile that includes Moicano, Gamrot and Mauricio Ruffy, which is a crowded and unfriendly neighborhood.

The other Australian in the picture

Before anybody books flights to Sydney, the 155-pound division has business this Saturday. Moicano (21-7-1) meets Tom Nolan (11-1) in a five-round main event at UFC Vegas 123 on Oct. 31 at Meta Apex. Nolan is Australian, sits No. 12 in the Meta Rankings, and owns a five-fight UFC winning streak of his own at lightweight. Moicano has seven rear-naked choke wins in the UFC, tied for third-most in company history behind Demian Maia (nine) and Michael Chiesa (eight). MMA Mania expects the lightweight rankings to move after that card, so the ladder Salkilld and Saint-Denis are climbing could look different by next Tuesday.

If Nolan wins, the UFC has two surging Australian lightweights in the top 15 and a home crowd in February with a clear favorite son to cheer. That’s a tidy setup for a promotion that likes to sell local heroes.

Sal’s take

No line is posted yet, and that’s the part I’m watching. Ranked No. 6 against No. 7 is about as close to a coin flip as rankings get. History says the books will shade the local kid with the shiny streak, because the public loves a prospect in front of his own fans, and the public pays for that love. Six straight wins is real. A home crowd moves the money more than it moves the fighter. If Salkilld opens as a heavy favorite over a guy one spot behind him, I’ll be sniffing around the Saint-Denis side before the hometown money piles in. If it opens close to even, I’ll sit on my hands until after Moicano and Nolan settle things Saturday, because that result tells us where the Sydney winner actually lands in 2027.
