Khabib Nurmagomedov posted a photo of himself standing next to UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell on his Instagram Story on Saturday. He added a two-word caption that did the opposite of calming anyone down. “Accidentally meeting,” he wrote. Championship Rounds grabbed the image and pushed it to X with a handshake emoji attached, and the comeback chatter started before most people had finished their morning coffee.
The replies were about what you’d expect. “It was not accidental,” one fan wrote. Another went with “We need a fight,” and someone else decided “Something big is cooking by Hunter.” The best one, flagged by Bloody Elbow, read: “Just happened to accidentally walk into his office.” A different user laid out the logic most people were thinking: “Khabib doesn’t do anything by accident, something’s getting cooked up.”
Here’s the backdrop. Nurmagomedov walked away after choking out Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2020, a win that unified the lightweight titles. That was six years ago. He has said over and over, with zero wiggle room, that he will never fight in MMA again. That has never stopped anyone. Every time he’s filmed on a mat or photographed shaking hands with his old bosses, the timeline acts like the walkout music is already cued.

The cousin in the room
The more likely explanation sits one branch over on the family tree. Bloody Elbow reported that the meeting was most likely about Usman Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s cousin. Usman is 22-0 (1NC), holds the PFL lightweight title and has become the most sought-after free agent in the sport since his PFL contract expired. He has spent months talking openly about a move to the UFC, and he was in the crowd at UFC 333 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night.
Dana White isn’t biting, at least publicly. Bloody Elbow reported that the UFC CEO says no deal has been discussed because the PFL still holds an exclusive negotiating period. “I don’t know where he is on his contract situation,” White said after UFC 333. He added that once Usman’s deal is up and he is free to negotiate, the UFC will start talking to him.
So you’ve got the UFC’s chief dealmaker, the most famous retired lightweight on earth and an unbeaten 155-pound champion with an expired contract, all in Abu Dhabi on the same weekend. Do the math however you like.

My read is that Khabib is done. He’s been telling us that for six years, and I believe him. But calling a sit-down with Hunter Campbell an accident, while your cousin is the biggest free agent in MMA and the PFL’s exclusive window is ticking down, is about the least accidental thing I’ve seen all year. I’d bet on Usman, with Khabib in his corner, long before I’d bet on any comeback. The next real tell is the day Usman’s exclusive period with the PFL officially closes, because that’s when White says the phone calls start.
