Kade Ruotolo is reportedly off ONE Fight Night 50 with an undisclosed injury. Nick Atkin first reported the withdrawal, which MiddleEasy relayed early Saturday. Ruotolo had been scheduled to face Ok Rae Yoon, and the Bangkok Post’s headline on the news identifies the bout as the card’s main event. The nature of the injury hasn’t been made public, and none of the reports so far name a replacement opponent or say whether ONE will rework the headliner.
The timing is rough. Less than 24 hours earlier, Kade was standing in the cage at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok while his twin brother Tye Ruotolo did something nobody had done to Christian Lee in more than a decade. Tye (3-0) dropped Lee with a two-punch combination, poured on ground and pound, climbed to mount, took the back when Lee covered up, and finished with a rear-naked choke at 2:08 of Round 1. That made him ONE’s lightweight (170 pounds) MMA champion in his third pro fight and left Lee (18-5) holding only the welterweight belt. Tye also picked up a $100,000 performance bonus.
Kade has been doing the same mats-to-cage conversion a little longer. He’s 4-0 in MMA, all of it under the ONE banner, and holds a ONE submission grappling title on top of past wins at ADCC and CJI. Yoon was supposed to be the next and biggest test of that run, in a headlining slot.
The complication that was already hanging over all this is weight class. Both twins compete at 170, and Tye said it plainly in his post-fight interview with Kade beside him.
“He’s going to be here next. We’ve got to figure it out because we’re in the same division. I don’t want to fight him,” Tye said.
That line now reads a little differently. “Here next” was presumably ONE Fight Night 50, and that’s off for now. Tye, for his part, said he’s open to whatever comes first, a grappling defense or an MMA defense, and told reporters to let him know who they want to see.
My take: the injury freezes the most interesting question in ONE’s lightweight division at exactly the wrong moment. Kade beating Yoon would have forced the twin conversation immediately, because a 5-0 grappling champion sitting behind his own brother’s belt is a problem a matchmaker can’t just shrug at. Now Tye gets a free lane to name his first challenger while Kade rehabs, and if that challenger turns out to be Yoon, nobody should be surprised. The only thing I’d ask of ONE is a real update on the injury before anyone starts drawing up a move to 155 or 185 for either twin.
