Joshua Van Draws Manel Kape for UFC 336 Main Event After Surviving Pantoja

The flyweight title tops the card at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on January 30, and tickets go on sale November 20.

Joshua Van Draws Manel Kape for UFC 336 Main Event After Surviving Pantoja

Joshua Van will put the UFC flyweight title on the line against Manel Kape in the main event of UFC 336 on January 30. UFC Canada announced the matchup Tuesday on X, calling it “An absolute SCRAP in our main event” and dropping the ticket on-sale date of November 20. The champion’s flag in the post was Myanmar’s. The challenger’s was Portugal’s.

The card goes down at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. It’s the promotion’s first numbered event of 2027, and the headliners were first revealed during the UFC 333 broadcast, according to a Last Word on Sports report carried by Yahoo Sports. That report lists this as Van’s second title defense.

The first one was a grind. Alexandre Pantoja came in with an obvious plan and took Van down five times, per Yahoo Sports’ latest pound-for-pound rankings. That looked like the formula a lot of people expected to work. It didn’t. Van took over the striking exchanges as the fight wore on, and the judges gave it to the champ. That win moved Van to No. 9 on Yahoo’s pound-for-pound list. You don’t see a flyweight on those lists very often.

Kape arrives as the No. 1 contender in MMA Mania’s flyweight Meta Rankings, which were updated this week. Pantoja sits right behind him at No. 2, so the line at 125 pounds is clear. Kape is also a former RIZIN bantamweight champion, which means he has already held a major title somewhere else. He has spent his UFC run trying to get a shot at this one.

A stacked Toronto card

The co-main event isn’t exactly filler. Carlos Prates, the No. 1-ranked welterweight at 24-7 with 19 knockouts, meets the unbeaten Michael Morales (19-0, 14 knockouts) for the interim welterweight title. The winner gets Islam Makhachev later in 2027. Makhachev chose to wait until after Ramadan instead of fighting Prates himself, which opened the door for Morales. Early betting lines lean slightly toward Prates. Morales also has to deal with the scale. On Instagram he posted a photo of himself weighing 220 pounds, and he has roughly three months to get down to the 170-pound limit.

It’s a good sign that the UFC kept the flyweights on top with that welterweight fight sitting right underneath. The 125-pound division has spent years getting stuck on undercards or treated as a hard sell. Now its champion is headlining a numbered card in Canada over two undefeated-or-close-to-it knockout artists. The matchmakers did right by Van.

Now my take. Pantoja’s five takedowns showed the blueprint against Van, and also its limits. Holding him down for stretches didn’t stop him from winning the fight on the feet later on. Kape has had a long time to study that tape. Whatever answer he brings to Toronto will have to do more than slow Van down, because the guy in that fight who was getting stronger late was the champion. Tickets open November 20, and I’d grab one before the Prates-Morales hype pushes the price up.
