Johnny Walker Wanted Tybura, Got a Short-Notice Main Event Against Cortes-Acosta Instead

Sean Brady's injury blew up the UFC Vegas 124 headliner, and the UFC replaced it with a top-10 heavyweight fight on November 7.

Sean Brady is out of UFC Vegas 124 with an injury, and his welterweight main event against Gabriel Bonfim went with him. The UFC filled the hole with heavyweights. Johnny Walker will now face Waldo Cortes-Acosta in the headliner on November 7 at the Apex.

Laerta Viana broke both stories on X on Thursday, first the Brady withdrawal and then the new main event. Bloody Elbow and MMA Mania followed with the matchup. Viana reported that the promotion tried to find a short-notice opponent for Bonfim and couldn’t land one in time, so the matchmakers dropped the welterweight plan entirely. None of the reports say what happens to Bonfim from here.

Walker gets the bump

This is only Walker’s second fight at heavyweight. The Brazilian debuted in the division last month with a win impressive enough to get him ranked No. 12, and he had already picked out his next target. He said he wanted Marcin Tybura, a longtime fixture at heavyweight, as a way to prove he belonged against the division’s established names.

He was also in no hurry. Walker told talkSPORT.com he expected to fight on the UFC’s final card of 2026 in December and planned to talk to the matchmakers about it. Instead he gets barely more than a week’s notice, a higher-ranked opponent than the one he asked for, and five rounds in a main event slot. If he wins, he jumps into the top 10.

Cortes-Acosta needs this one

Cortes-Acosta sits at No. 8 and is the guy with more to lose. Not long ago he was being talked about as a title contender after stringing together three straight stoppage wins. Then he lost back to back to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes, and the momentum went with it.

A third straight loss, to a fighter making his second heavyweight start, would push him well out of the title picture. A win over a ranked name who just moved up gets him back on track and protects his spot in the top 10.

The UFC could have rushed in some welterweight to take a fight with Bonfim on a few days’ warning and called it a headliner. Instead it took a rising heavyweight who wanted to fight anyway and matched him with the best-ranked opponent available. That’s the kind of chaos booking I’ll defend every time. Walker asked for Tybura in December and got a top-8 heavyweight on November 7. If he wins, his next callout gets a lot more ambitious than Tybura.
