Ismael Bonfim is no longer on the UFC roster. Guilherme Cruz reported the release Monday night on X, saying he’d been told the promotion cut the lightweight after he missed weight by 7.5 pounds and then got stopped by Francisco Prado at UFC Vegas 122 on Saturday. Cruz added that a full story was on the way at MMA Fighting. Within about 20 minutes the post had made its way to r/MMA.
The trouble started Friday. MMA Junkie flagged it on X as a “GIANT WEIGHT MISS ALERT” when Bonfim came in 7.5 pounds over the lightweight limit, and for a stretch the bout’s status was listed as TBD. A miss that size usually puts a fight in real danger. This one went ahead anyway, and Bonfim and Prado walked out Saturday on a card streaming live on Paramount Plus.
It didn’t last long. Prado finished it in Round 1. The UFC’s account called it a TKO in one clip and a first-round knockout in another, and MMA Fighting’s post said Prado “DESTROYS” Bonfim, noting he’d come in more than seven pounds heavy. Whatever label ends up on the record, the extra weight didn’t give Bonfim any advantage once the cage door shut. Prado was the one landing, and he got it done early.

Renato Moicano spelled out the stakes the night before the fight. Posting in Portuguese on X while quoting the MMA Junkie alert, Moicano pointed out that both men were coming off four losses in their last five fights, and he put the miss at eight pounds. His read was blunt. He wrote that Bonfim’s chances of keeping his job were low even with a win, and that he’d need a miracle to stay in the game. He also predicted a war. He got the job security part right, but the war ended quickly.
That puts Prado’s result in a different light. A fighter carrying a 1-4 run over his last five takes a fight against an opponent who couldn’t make the limit, and he ends it in the first round, which is the cleanest possible way to avoid becoming a release story himself. The UFC’s own social posts went big on him, and at least for now he gets to sit on a win instead of waiting for a phone call.

The sources don’t say where Bonfim goes from here, and neither he nor the UFC had commented in anything posted so far. Cruz’s MMA Fighting piece should add more detail.
My take: a 7.5-pound miss is a camp that fell apart somewhere well before Friday, and when you already have four losses in your last five, the UFC won’t give you the benefit of the doubt. Releasing a guy after a loss always stings, and I don’t celebrate anybody losing a job. But the scale is the one fight you get to prepare for with no opponent, and Bonfim lost it badly. Prado deserves the attention here. He was just as close to the edge as Bonfim, made weight, and finished the fight in the first round.
