Islam Makhachev was asked about a potential jump to middleweight this week, and Sportskeeda ran his response as an honest take on the idea. The more revealing material came from a separate interview, though. Makhachev told Red Corner MMA, in comments relayed by Championship Rounds on X, that he doesn’t know exactly how many fights he has left but believes he is “at the finish line” of his career.
He was also blunt about why. “There aren’t many things that could give me motivation in this sport,” Makhachev said. “I just want to fight the contenders, but I don’t see any new names.”
Then came the line that reframes any conversation about a 185-pound title run. “My mother has always been against me fighting. I’ve always listened to my mother, so soon I will obey her word.”

That’s a strange backdrop for multi-division ambitions. A fighter who is chasing a second belt usually talks about the next five years. Makhachev is talking about the exit.
The Prates Situation
All of this lands days after Dana White aired some frustration. Speaking to The Mac Life, White said Makhachev had verbally agreed to fight Carlos Prates in January before withdrawing. “Yeah, it was verbally agreed,” White said. “I like when guys fight a lot, being the champ I’m not expecting you to fight 3 times a year but twice would be nice.”

White added that an inactive champion backs up the division and that plenty of fighters want a title shot. He also offered a broader theory about why stars like Makhachev, Khamzat Chimaev and Ilia Topuria tend to fight once a year. “I think it’s money, I mean once you get so much money,” White said, explaining that young fighters want to fight often to get paid, while established ones no longer have to.
Prates didn’t stay quiet. He reposted a Makhachev quote from the UFC Performance Institute and captioned it with three lying-face emojis, a pretty clear signal of how he views the champion’s account of what happened.
So the timeline looks like this. White says a January fight with Prates was agreed and then fell apart. Prates is publicly calling it out. Makhachev says he doesn’t see new names to motivate him, and that retirement is coming soon out of respect for his mother.

Quick Take
I’d file the middleweight talk under hypotheticals until Makhachev says otherwise with a date attached. The motivation quote is what stands out to me. When a champion says he doesn’t see new names, he’s usually telling you he wants a fight that feels historic, and a second-division swing is the obvious candidate. But you don’t chase that kind of project while telling interviewers you’re at the finish line and about to obey your mother. Prates, meanwhile, is a name Makhachev apparently already said yes to once, according to White. If the champion is serious about fighting contenders, the most direct path back to the cage runs through the guy currently posting lying emojis under his quotes, not through 185.
