Donald Trump Floats Jake Paul for President Weeks Before His Dubai Comeback

Trump's talk about Paul's political future lands days after Paul booked a Christmas Eve return in Dubai, his first fight since Anthony Joshua broke his jaw.

Donald Trump is reportedly talking up Jake Paul as a guy with a future in politics, and possibly the presidency. Yahoo ran the story under the headline “Could Jake Paul Actually Become President Someday? Trump Seems to Think So,” while Yardbarker and a second Yahoo piece framed it as Trump having put Paul’s political future “on the table.” A third Yahoo headline went a step further: “Jake Paul Is Getting Closer to Politics, and Trump Might Be the Reason.”

The full transcript of Trump’s comments hasn’t surfaced in the reporting we’ve reviewed, so the precise wording is still worth tracking down. The direction of it is clear enough, though. A sitting president is publicly entertaining the idea of a YouTuber-turned-boxer someday running for office. Paul, for his part, hasn’t announced any campaign or political plans in the material we’ve seen.

Back in the ring first

The timing is pure Jake Paul. The Trump chatter arrived right after Paul announced his boxing return on Dec. 24 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, headlining an MVP card. MVP said the event comes together with Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism and the Dubai Sports Council and is billing it as a Christmas Eve spectacle.

It will be Paul’s first fight since Anthony Joshua broke his jaw almost exactly a year earlier. Paul needed multiple surgeries to repair it. That loss dropped him to 12-2 and snapped a six-fight winning streak that included wins over Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chávez Jr., Nate Diaz and Mike Perry.

There’s no opponent yet, and no word on where the card will air. MVP co-founder and CEO Nakisa Bidarian said in a statement, “We’re finalizing an opponent worthy of Jake’s return and look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks.”

Paul sounded like a man who has read the comments section and enjoyed every word of it.

“I’ve spent years proving people wrong, taking risks, and pushing myself against opponents nobody thought I’d face,” Paul said in a release. “Nothing that’s happened has changed my belief in myself or what I’m working toward.”

He also handed MVP’s marketing team a free Christmas poster: “Merry Christmas, Dubai. Santa Paul is coming to town, and somebody’s getting knocked out.” On the opponent search he added, “We’ve got plenty of names on the list; let’s see who signs the contract.”

My take

I’ll give Trump this much. If the job is mostly pulling attention out of thin air and turning it into money, Jake Paul is overqualified. He took a Disney Channel résumé and a YouTube audience and spun them into paydays against a 58-year-old Tyson, a Chávez, and two UFC names, then actually stepped in with Joshua, which most guys in his position would have ducked forever. Politics is basically press conferences with no referee, and that’s the one arena where Paul has never lost a round. But the guy is 12-2 with a surgically repaired jaw and no name on the Dubai contract yet. Before anybody prints yard signs, let’s see who MVP announces in the coming weeks, because the most important vote Jake Paul needs right now is from whoever agrees to fight him on Dec. 24.
