Alistair Overeem Is Plotting a Comeback and He's Channeling George Foreman

The former K-1 champion and UFC title challenger posted on X Friday that he's in camp, and he named Foreman and Bernard Hopkins as his inspiration, with no opponent, promotion or date attached.

Alistair Overeem says he’s coming back. The former UFC heavyweight title challenger and K-1 champion posted on X on Friday that he’s in training camp preparing for a return, and he named a pair of boxing greats, George Foreman and Bernard Hopkins, as the men who inspire him.

The post opened with “Yo everyone... I’m back on X 👊” and got to the business quickly. “I’m in camp.. training hard and preparing for the comeback!” he wrote.

Then came the line that’ll get passed around group chats all weekend: “George Foreman..Bernard Hopkins.. these are the greats that inspire me but my training and optimisation is next level.”

He signed off by saying he’s “looking to create a masterpiece” and told fans to follow along, with a link attached.

What the post left out matters as much as what it said. There’s no opponent. There’s no promotion. There’s no date. He never even said which sport. He called it a comeback and stopped there, so anyone telling you it’s MMA, kickboxing or a boxing debut is guessing. Picking two boxers as his reference points is a hint if you squint, and that’s as far as it goes until he says more.

The nostalgia machine was already warming up before he posted. Three days earlier, a thread compiling every TKO and KO win and loss from his UFC career went up on r/MMA. Good timing, or good luck.

The Division He Left Behind

If Overeem has the Octagon in mind, the heavyweight picture is crowded with familiar faces. Alexander Volkov, who counts Overeem among the names on his resume, beat Rizvan Kuniev by unanimous decision at UFC 333, Yahoo Sports reported. Volkov is 41-11 overall, 15-5 in the UFC and 7-1 over his last eight, with the lone loss in that stretch being the disputed decision against Ciryl Gane at UFC 310.

Volkov still got passed over. Josh Hokit gets the title shot at UFC 334, and the UFC 335 matchup between Alex Pereira and Sergei Pavlovich could produce the next challenger. Former two-time champ Stipe Miocic told casino.org/canada that if Volkov gets his chance, “he’ll get it done.”

That’s the room Overeem would be walking back into, should he walk back into it at all, and plenty of the guys in it are the same ones he used to share cards with.

Quick Take

I’m a sucker for heavyweights and I’m a sucker for veterans who refuse to sit still, so part of me wants this to be real. But “optimisation is next level” is a phrase I’d expect from a supplement ad, and a comeback announcement without a sport, an opponent or a date is a mood board. Overeem is one of the most fun heavyweights the sport has produced, and he’s earned the right to try whatever he wants. Until there’s a name across from him and a date on a poster, though, this is a training montage with a link in the post.
