Volkanovski and Evloev Split on Who's Next, and Kevin Vallejos Sits Right in the Middle

The champion puts Jean Silva and Aljamain Sterling at the front of the featherweight line, while Evloev says the Sterling vs. Vallejos winner jumps ahead of Silva.

Alexander Volkanovski has a title fight in five days, and he’s already sorting the line behind it. The featherweight champion named Jean Silva and Aljamain Sterling as the two closest challengers in the division, MiddleEasy reported, and he also spoke well of Kevin Vallejos and the chance Vallejos has in front of him against Sterling. Heavy.com ran with the Vallejos angle too, saying Volkanovski came away impressed with the rising prospect.

The man Volkanovski actually has to beat first sees the queue a little differently. Movsar Evloev, who challenges for the belt in the UFC 333 main event, called Sterling vs. Vallejos a title eliminator and put both men ahead of Silva for a crack at the winner of Saturday’s fight, according to MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn.

So the champion and the challenger agree on Sterling. They split on Silva. And Vallejos is the variable both of them keep mentioning, which is a pretty good week for a guy whose name is still showing up in headlines next to the word “prospect.”

The fight that matters first

UFC 333 goes down Saturday, Oct. 24, with Volkanovski defending against Evloev at the top of the card. UFC Brasil’s promotion has the event tied to Abu Dhabi, with Brazilians Daniel Santos, Iasmin Lucindo and Nicolle Caliari also on the lineup. In Brazil the prelims start at 10 a.m. Brasília time and the main card at 11 a.m. on Paramount+.

UFC Brasil also posted a clip promoting Volkanovski laying out his plan for Evloev, so the champion is doing what champions do in fight week: talking about the guy in front of him and the guys behind him in the same breath.

The market isn’t picking a side. Championship Rounds pointed out that Volkanovski vs. Evloev was trading as a 50-50 fight on Polymarket as of Monday night. A sitting champion getting zero respect from the money is a story by itself.

In the lighter news from camp, Championship Rounds also shared a clip from Volkanovski’s own channel in which one of his teammates passed out from exhaustion during a training challenge. File that under evidence the pace in that room is real.

Why the queue argument matters

If Volkanovski keeps the belt, his own words put Silva and Sterling in pole position, and Vallejos only gets there by going through Sterling. If Evloev wins, he’s already told everybody he thinks the Sterling vs. Vallejos winner deserves the call before Silva does. Silva’s camp should be paying attention to Saturday more than anybody not actually fighting on it.

My quick take. A coin flip on Polymarket for a champion who’s already handing out the next appointments tells me the money doesn’t care about the confidence, and frankly neither do I. Whoever is holding the belt Saturday night in Abu Dhabi gets to rewrite this list, and Silva is the one guy who could get bumped without throwing a punch. If you’re looking for the live dog in this whole picture, it’s Vallejos. Both men fighting for the title brought him up this week, and when the two guys at the top of a division keep saying your name, it usually shows up in a betting line about a week before the books admit it.
