Virna Jandiroba Says She'll Submit Tatiana Suarez and the Odds Say Good Luck

Suarez opens as a -210 favorite on FanDuel in Saturday's UFC Vegas 124 co-main, with a likely title shot against new champ Mackenzie Dern waiting for the winner.

Virna Jandiroba and Tatiana Suarez finally share a cage Saturday night after the matchup fell apart twice before. The strawweight co-main event at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas could decide who gets the next crack at new champion Mackenzie Dern. FanDuel has Suarez at -210 and Jandiroba at +168, so the books and the public are leaning hard toward the American.

Jandiroba isn’t pretending she has a secret plan. “I see myself submitting Tatiana,” she told UFC News this week, and she added that after two scrapped bookings, “I’m very familiarized with her game.” Suarez kept her goal just as simple: “Finish this opponent and get a title shot.”

Both women have already had their title shot and lost it, which explains why this fight works as a title eliminator. Jandiroba (23-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) fought Dern for the vacant belt last October and came up short. She rebounded with a unanimous decision over Tabatha Ricci in April. In a UFC.com feature this week she said the title loss still made her a better fighter. Suarez (12-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) got her shot in February 2025 and lost to then-champ Zhang Weili, the only defeat on her record. Since then she’s beaten Amanda Lemos on the cards and submitted Loopy Godinez. The UFC pointed out on X that a win Saturday could put Suarez atop the strawweight division in both submissions and finishes.

Suarez has grappling on the brain outside her own fight, too. She spoke with Aaron Bronsteter about whether grappling is getting penalized in MMA following the controversial stand-up in the Moicano vs. Nolan fight. Those comments look different heading into a fight against a woman whose whole job is to drag her somewhere uncomfortable.

MMA Junkie’s Dan Tom, who is 122-76-1 on main cards in 2026, went against the grain and took Jandiroba by submission inside three rounds. His case: Suarez turns 36 next month, her wrestling has arguably slipped in recent years, and her takedown defense looks closer to 25 percent on tape than the official number suggests. He also noted she’s rarely faced anyone actually trying to take her down. He compared Jandiroba’s chain wrestling to Demian Maia’s and called her the best grappler Suarez has ever faced.

Jandiroba and Suarez are expected to walk out around 10:15 p.m. ET on Paramount+, with the card starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Sal’s take: At -210 the market is pricing Suarez at roughly a 68 percent chance, and Jandiroba’s +168 implies about 37 percent. That’s a lot of respect for a 35-year-old who has lost the only time she stepped up to the very top and whose biggest edge, the wrestling, runs straight into the deepest submission game she’s ever seen. I don’t love paying two-to-one for a fighter whose path to victory goes through her opponent’s best position. Suarez can absolutely win this by staying on top and grinding out 15 minutes, and if she does I’ll grumble and move on. But Jandiroba lost to Dern on her back foot against an elite grappler and still came out the other side with a clean April win, and she’s been studying this exact opponent through two canceled camps. I’ll take the +168 and a small sprinkle on the submission. That’s a live dog, and I’ve lost money on far worse.
