Unbeaten Jacobe Smith Still Hasn't Had a Full Camp and Just Took His Biggest Fight Yet

Smith (13-0) replaces the injured Carlos Leal against 22-fight UFC veteran Randy Brown at UFC Vegas 123 on Oct. 31, less than a month after his last knockout.

Jacobe Smith is fighting again on Halloween. The undefeated welterweight will replace the injured Carlos Leal and meet Randy Brown in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 123 on Oct. 31 at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas.

Heavy.com reported the booking early Tuesday, citing multiple sources, and Marcel Dorff posted the matchup on X with a pumpkin emoji, which is about as festive as fight announcements get. The exact turnaround depends on who’s counting. MMA Mania put it at 12 days’ notice, and BJPenn.com said 11. Either way, it’s less than two weeks.

It’s also less than a month since Smith’s last fight. He knocked out Bruce Whitehead in the first round at UFC 332 on Oct. 3 in Salt Lake City, needing under two minutes to put away the short-notice newcomer and run his record to 13-0.

How Smith got here

The 30-year-old was 8-0 when he showed up on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2024 and stopped Christien Savoie in Round 2 to earn a contract. Three months later he knocked out Preston Parsons in just over a minute in his UFC debut. He then submitted longtime veteran Niko Price in the second round at UFC 317, and earlier this year he stopped the previously unbeaten Josiah Harrell in three minutes at UFC Houston for his first Performance of the Night bonus.

That’s four UFC fights and four finishes. According to MMA Mania, Smith hasn’t had a full training camp for any of them. Most prospects would like a camp. Smith apparently treats them as optional.

The step up

Brown is a different kind of problem. The 36-year-old has been on the UFC roster for nearly 11 years, joining as an undefeated fighter in early 2016, and he’s made 22 walks to the Octagon. He’s shared the cage with two future champions in Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena, and it was Della Maddalena who snapped Brown’s best UFC run, a four-fight win streak, in 2023.

Brown (20-8) answered that loss with three straight wins, but things have gone sideways since. He’s 1-3 over his last four and on the first two-fight skid of his career. Gabriel Bonfim stopped him with a knee in Brown’s first UFC main event, and Kevin Holland beat him on the cards at UFC 327 earlier this year. His last win was a knockout of Nicolas Dalby in April 2025.

The headliner is a five-round lightweight scrap between top 15 contenders Renato Moicano and Tom Nolan. With Smith in, the card holds at 13 fights.

Here’s my take. Smith has spent a chunk of this year calling out Holland, and Holland just beat Brown. If Smith walks through the guy Holland outpointed, on 12 days’ notice with no camp, his call for that fight gets a lot louder. Brown knows this too. A third straight loss to a prospect who skipped camp is the kind of result that gets a 36-year-old veteran’s next contract discussed in hushed tones, so expect him to show up desperate on Oct. 31.
