The Books Had Preston LaGrange as a +400 Dog. One Round Later He Had a UFC Contract

LaGrange took the Contender Series headliner on two weeks' notice, moved up to light heavyweight and still finished heavy favorite Nell Ariano midway through Round 1.

Preston LaGrange is headed to the UFC after knocking out Nell Ariano in the first round of Tuesday’s Dana White’s Contender Series headliner. He did it as a +400 underdog, in a weight class above his usual one, on two weeks’ notice.

The light heavyweight bout topped Week 9 of DWCS Season 10 on Oct. 6 at Meta Apex in Las Vegas. According to reports from Yahoo Sports and Sherdog, LaGrange got the stoppage midway through the opening round and earned a roster spot after impressing Dana White and the UFC’s matchmakers. The UFC’s Paramount+ account posted the finish on X shortly after it happened.

The win moves LaGrange to 7-1. He came in at 199.5 pounds for the light heavyweight fight, so he wasn’t exactly a huge 205er walking around the Apex. Ariano went off as the heavy favorite, and on paper that made sense. You had a guy with a full camp at his natural weight against a late replacement jumping up a class with a fortnight to prepare. That setup is about as close to a free square as the Contender Series offers, and it still lost.

LaGrange kept his post-fight comments short and grateful.

“It feels good,” he said in the cage. “I am excited to be here, and I am ready to put on a show for the UFC.”

Asked when he wanted to make his promotional debut, he made clear he would take whatever date the UFC hands him. “I mean, I am always ready,” LaGrange said. “I took this fight on a two-week notice, so, you know… I am always ready. I am training year-round, so I will be ready whenever the UFC calls me.”

No debut date or opponent has been announced. Sherdog boiled the whole night down to three phrases on X: a +400 underdog, two weeks’ notice and a jump up a weight class, all turned into a contract inside one round.

A +400 price means a $100 bet returns $400 in profit, which works out to roughly a 20 percent implied chance of winning. Books priced LaGrange like a guy who wins this fight one time in five. I’d bet a lot of the people laying chalk on Ariano tucked him into a parlay with four other favorites and called it safe money, and those tickets are now in the trash. Contender Series lines have always been soft, because books are pricing guys with thin records and little tape. When a short-notice fighter goes up a division, the market tends to overreact to the circumstances and skip over the fighter. LaGrange said he trains year-round, and that’s exactly the sort of detail that never makes it into a line. Whoever the UFC books against him next, I want to see the opening number before the public piles on, because he won’t be +400 again for a long time.
