Tanner Boser Ends Canada's Five-Fight Skid by Mauling Jhonata Diniz in Edmonton

The hometown heavyweight took Diniz down in every round and got the stoppage at 4:26 of Round 3.

A referee reaches in as a heavyweight rains down punches on a trapped opponent against the cage

Tanner Boser gave UFC Edmonton something to cheer about Saturday night, grinding Jhonata Diniz into the canvas for three rounds before referee Jason Herzog waved it off at 4:26 of Round 3.

The win was Team Canada’s first of the night, according to Cageside Press. Dovy Simuliunas put a sharper number on it on X, posting that Boser ended Canada’s five-fight losing streak. The local crowd had been waiting a while, and it showed. Boser walked out to a standing ovation, and UFC Canada’s X account posted “EDMONTON STAND UP” moments after the finish.

The Edmonton native didn’t win this one on the feet. Diniz had the better of the early striking, walking Boser down, chopping at his lead leg and timing his lunges well enough to land a clean counter left. Boser landed a left hook of his own, but he clearly didn’t love where the stand-up was heading, so he shot and put the Brazilian on his back.

That set the pattern. Diniz spent most of the first round trying to wall-walk up the cage, and Boser kept dragging him away from it, at one point stepping on his ankle so he couldn’t post. Diniz didn’t get fully upright until roughly five seconds remained.

The crucifix did the damage

Round 2 opened with both heavyweights loading up and mostly hitting air. Boser got tired of whiffing and took Diniz down again with just under three minutes left, landed in side control and then locked up the crucifix. From there it was elbows and right hands into a trapped man. Diniz came out of that stretch with a red face and a cut on his head, and he was in pure survival mode by the horn after Boser advanced to mount and briefly hunted a submission.

The break before the third ran long because Diniz needed time for a loose cup, which Boser didn’t seem thrilled about. He spent some of the wait turning to the crowd and asking for noise.

Once they restarted, Diniz needed a knockout and never got close to one. Boser ran through a single leg and was in full mount with more than four minutes left. When Diniz turned to his knees, Boser took his back and started swinging. Herzog warned Diniz more than once to defend himself and improve his position. He couldn’t do much of either, and Herzog stepped in with 34 seconds to go.

No next opponent has been announced for Boser.

Quick take

I’ll take this version of Boser all day. A heavyweight who loses a few early exchanges, recognizes it, and simply decides the other guy is going to carry 250-ish pounds of Canadian for 15 minutes is a heavyweight who understands his job. It wasn’t pretty in the first five minutes, and the round 2 swing-and-miss festival will not make anyone’s highlight reel. But a hometown fighter with his country on a five-fight skid took the dull, smart route to a finish, and he did it with Herzog practically begging the other guy to give him a reason to keep it going. That’s a hell of a way to stop the bleeding.
