Ryan Garcia's Ringside Callout of Teofimo Lopez Is Turning Into a Real Fight

The Ring's Mike Coppinger reports the two champions are in advanced talks for the first quarter of 2027, a month after Garcia stopped Conor Benn in two rounds.

Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez are in advanced negotiations for a title fight targeted for the first three months of 2027, according to a report from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger. Garcia holds the WBC welterweight title. Lopez holds the WBA belt at super welterweight. No date or venue has been set, and the reports so far don’t say which weight the fight would be contested at or which belts would be on the line.

The idea went from wishful thinking to an actual negotiation fast. Last month Garcia knocked out Conor Benn in the second round under the Zuffa Boxing banner. It was the first defense of the WBC strap he won earlier this year by beating Mario Barrios. Lopez was sitting ringside that night, and once the fight was over Garcia called his name. Lopez then tried to climb into the ring, presumably for a staredown, and security stopped him before he got there. The moment turned into a brief commotion, and it also turned out to be the opening bid.

Lopez arrives in a different place than Garcia does. He’s coming back from a loss to Shakur Stevenson, who has since signed with Zuffa Boxing, and he answered that defeat two months ago with a strong win over Rolando Romero. That put his record at 23-2.

One complication is still on the table. MiddleEasy noted that Lopez has an outstanding WBA obligation to fight Jack Catterall, and none of the reporting explains how that gets resolved. It could be a step-aside deal, a vacated belt or a fight that comes first. Any of those would change the shape of a first-quarter date, and the Catterall question will probably decide the timeline more than either fighter’s schedule.

The stakes are easy to read. Terence Crawford has retired, and Canelo Alvarez looks to be near the end of his run. Boxing needs young names who can sell a fight on their own, and Garcia and Lopez can both do that. MMA Mania suggested the winner could set up a big payday next, possibly against Devin Haney or Stevenson.

This is the fight to make, and the way it came together is the reason why. Garcia didn’t take a soft follow-up after the Benn knockout. He looked straight at the most dangerous available name in the building, and that man tried to get through the ropes to answer him. Fighters who want each other that badly usually give you a good night. The paperwork is the hard part now, and the first thing to watch is whether Lopez and the WBA can settle the Catterall mandate before the calendar flips to January.
