Renato Moicano and Tom Nolan headlined UFC Fight Night 292 in a lightweight main event, and MMA Junkie has the full results, card, and highlights posted. I’m not going to guess at a winner off a headline. If you want the scorecards and the finishes, that’s where they live. What I can give you is why this one mattered and the mess Moicano made for himself before he ever walked out.
On paper this was a ranked fight with real stakes. In the UFC Meta Rankings, updated after UFC 332 in Salt Lake City, Moicano sat at No. 8 at 155 and Nolan at No. 11. The two guys sitting between them were Mateusz Gamrot at No. 9 and Mauricio Ruffy at No. 10, so the winner gets a clean jump and the loser slides toward Rafael Fiziev and Tofiq Musayev territory. Those Meta Rankings matter more than usual right now, since the official media rankings are expected to be phased out in the coming weeks.
Then Moicano opened his mouth, which is the reason a lot of us like him.
In an interview with Guilherme Cruz that MMA Fighting posted on X on Oct. 2, Moicano pitched himself as the guy to welcome Ilia Topuria back. Topuria, the former two-division champion, is coming off a devastating loss that left him needing serious time to recover, and he’s now ranked No. 1 at lightweight behind champion Justin Gaethje. Moicano didn’t dress it up.
He called Topuria a real name and said the former champ needs an easy fight on the way back, adding that anyone who has watched how the UFC operates already knows that’s how it goes.
He laid out the options as he sees them: either the UFC matches Topuria with Paddy Pimblett (No. 5 in the Meta Rankings) or hands him something to rebuild on. “I think his confidence is broken,” Moicano said. He also allowed that Topuria could come back angry and knock out the next guy, and admitted he wasn’t even sure Topuria is the fight he’ll end up asking for.
That’s a fighter answering a question straight, and I’ll take it every time over a guy reading off a cue card. The catch is obvious. You don’t get to call out a former champ while a ranked opponent is standing across from you on fight week.
There’s an old thread running through this card’s division, too. Moicano fought Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 272 in Las Vegas back in March 2022. Dos Anjos, now 41, lost to Alexander Hernandez by TKO at 3:12 of Round 2 at UFC 332, his fourth straight loss in what was his 50th pro appearance, and then took his gloves off in the Octagon without getting a microphone. He hasn’t announced anything officially, Essentially Sports noted. The 155 guys Moicano came up alongside are running out of runway, and he knows it.
My take: the Topuria callout only works if Moicano handled Nolan. If he did, he’s got a ready-made pitch, a top-10 ranking, and a former champ who might actually want a dance partner. If Nolan won, an 11th-ranked guy just took the No. 8 spot from a man who was already talking about his next fight, and Moicano’s quote about being “only as good as your last fight” gets read back to him. The next ranking shuffle lands after UFC Vegas 122 on Oct. 10 at the Meta Apex.
