Raul Rosas Jr. Reunites With Raoni Barcelos Weeks After the Finish That Scared Everyone

Barcelos, whose coach Glover Teixeira said he suffered brain swelling, is out of medical care and answered Rosas on Instagram with thanks.

Raul Rosas Jr. and Raoni Barcelos finally got to see each other again away from the cage. The two bantamweights met up in Las Vegas several weeks after their UFC Vegas 121 main event ended with Barcelos suffering a medical emergency in Round 5. Rosas shared photos and video of the reunion on Instagram. Heavy reported the meeting and Yahoo Sports carried it.

Rosas opened his post with “Much respect to this warrior.” He wrote that the two of them left everything in the Octagon. He then made the point that mattered most to anyone who watched that night: “More than anything, I’m glad he’s doing okay.” He closed with “Nothing but respect for you, brother” and wished Barcelos a full recovery.

Barcelos replied in the comments, and his message carried a detail worth noticing. “Thank you very much for the fight we had, brother, it was a big war and you were very respectful when I felt bad and fell, a big hug for you and your whole family, we are together,” he wrote. In plain terms, Barcelos is crediting Rosas for how he handled the moment his opponent went down. A fighter chasing a finish has a split second to read what’s in front of him. Barcelos is saying Rosas read it correctly.

What Happened on September 26

Rosas won by fifth-round TKO at Meta Apex in Las Vegas on September 26. The fight went back and forth for nearly 25 minutes, and both men took home $100,000 for Fight of the Night. According to Heavy’s report, Rosas was behind on the scorecards going into the fifth. He came out of his corner hunting a stoppage, and the stoppage came after Barcelos had his medical emergency.

The full picture of what happened to Barcelos still isn’t public. His friend and coach, former UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira, revealed that Barcelos had brain swelling. The good news is that Barcelos is now out of medical care and at home with his family.

What’s Next

For Rosas, this is easily the biggest win of his UFC run. Heavy argued it should put him in the bantamweight top 10 for his next fight. Nobody has announced an opponent or a date yet.

The outlook for Barcelos is murkier. A loss in a war like this one barely dents his standing as a competitor. Whether he fights again at all is an open question right now, and nobody should push him for an answer.

My take: the scorecard detail is the part that sticks with me. Rosas was down entering Round 5 of a main event and went out to change the result himself instead of hoping the judges saw things his way. That’s the instinct you want in a young contender. The way this ended means he’ll never get a clean highlight out of it, and I suspect he doesn’t want one. Rank him, give him a real name next, and let Barcelos take all the time he needs.
