Quillan Salkilld wants to fight at home in February. The No. 6-ranked UFC lightweight posted “Reporting for duty” on Instagram and added a “Feb” hashtag. That points to UFC Sydney on Feb. 6 at Afterpay Arena, as Heavy reported. The card has no announced fights yet, and the UFC hasn’t confirmed Salkilld or an opponent. Fans on r/MMA read the post as the fight being locked in. The post itself only teases it.
The timing is pointed. Salkilld posted only days after calling out Max Holloway and Paddy Pimblett, according to MMA Sucka, so he has already named the opponents he wants and is now naming the month.
Where Salkilld stands
Salkilld is 26 and 13-1 as a pro. He is 6-0 in the UFC, and five of those six wins are stoppages. His last outing was the one that moved him up the rankings: a first-round submission of Mateusz Gamrot. Finishing Gamrot that early is a real result. Gamrot is the kind of relentless wrestler who usually drags a prospect into deep water and leaves him there. Before that, Salkilld beat Nasrat Haqparast, who has now lost two straight.
The six names ranked above him explain why Holloway keeps coming up:
- Justin Gaethje, the champion, is injured and is expected to face Arman Tsarukyan when he returns.
- Ilia Topuria has been called out by Pimblett, and that matchup looks makeable.
- Charles Oliveira headlines UFC 335 in December against Diego Lopes for the BMF title.
- Max Holloway is available, per Heavy.
That makes Holloway the only name in the top five without a fight or an obvious next assignment. If Pimblett ends up with Topuria, Holloway is also the only callout target still open to Salkilld.
My take
Book Holloway in Sydney and let the main event sell itself. The UFC gets a hometown arena behind an unbeaten Australian, and Salkilld gets the most honest test available in the division. Holloway doesn’t get rattled, he doesn’t fade, and he will make a 26-year-old answer questions for as long as the fight lasts. Salkilld finished Gamrot in the first round, which tells me his grappling entries are already elite. What I want to see is whether he makes adjustments between rounds against a veteran who has spent years making them himself.
I’d pick Salkilld by submission if he gets Holloway down early. If he doesn’t, I’d pick Holloway on volume. The UFC has until Feb. 6 to give us the answer, and nobody sensible should want them to waste a Sydney date on anyone ranked below him.
