Mike Malott knocked out Joaquin Buckley at 2:32 of Round 2 to win the welterweight main event of UFC Fight Night: Buckley vs. Malott in Edmonton.
MMA Junkie described the finishing shot on X as “a perfect knee,” and judging by how fast the clips spread, a lot of people agreed. Buckley walked into a main event built around his name and left it on the wrong end of a highlight.
The knockout breaks the timeline
Championship Rounds (@ChampRDS) got there first with the all-caps treatment: “MIKE MALOTT JUST SLEPT JOAQUIN BUCKLEY IN ROUND 2.” A follow-up expletive and an exploding-head emoji capped it off, and that post pulled more than 5,000 engagements, the biggest number of the night.

Spinnin Backfist (@SpinninBackfist) went with “Mike Malott puts Buckley to SLEEP” and added a shouted line about what a knockout it was. The bigger outlets piled on right behind. ESPN MMA (@espnmma) went all caps too, calling it an unreal knockout in Edmonton, and MMA Fighting (@MMAFighting) posted that Malott had knocked Buckley out cold, with a row of shocked emojis for good measure.

Then Malott gave everyone a line to remember. Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) shared it on X with a Canadian flag: “I may be soft-spoken, but I’m fucking hard-hitting.” Helwani called it “a tremendous quote,” and it’s hard to argue. Quiet guy, loud knee.
The doubters and the armchair cornermen
Sean Strickland had already put his chips on Malott before the card started. In a clip Championship Rounds posted, Strickland prefaced his pick with a comment about Buckley’s race, then got blunter about the fighting itself: “Malott all day. Buckley can’t fight. The guys like a f*cking turtle.” Strickland being Strickland, the delivery was ugly. The pick, for what it’s worth, was right.

Belal Muhammad (@bullyb170) offered something closer to actual coaching. Before the finish showed up on the timeline, the former welterweight champ wrote that “Buckley is better when he isn’t being patient he needs to get wild.” It reads like a man watching a fighter he knows well do something that didn’t suit him, and a few minutes later the fight was over.
Somebody’s having a great night
Championship Rounds also flagged a big Polymarket ticket earlier in the day, posting that someone had put $10,792 on Malott to beat Buckley. The post said it pays out $20,362. Whoever that was is now roughly $9,500 richer and probably not sleeping much either.

And in the cruelest timing of the night, Dana White (@danawhite) had posted a clip hours before the main event announcing that Buckley had arrived at the arena. He arrived, all right. He just didn’t get to leave the way he planned.
What’s next for Malott
Nobody in this batch of posts called Malott out by name, which is a little surprising for a guy who just flattened Buckley in a headliner. For now, the loudest message belongs to Malott himself, the soft-spoken one, and a knee at 2:32 of Round 2 that will be on every welterweight’s phone tonight.
