Mauricio Ruffy Says 'News Is Coming' as Betting Markets Eye Him for Quillan Salkilld

The No. 10 lightweight in the UFC Meta Rankings posted the teaser a month after stepping in to face Arman Tsarukyan in September.

Mauricio Ruffy has his next fight lined up, or at least he wants everyone to think so. The lightweight posted a short teaser on his own account (@Ruffymma), which Championship Rounds picked up on X late Tuesday: “News is coming…” There was no opponent, no date and no card attached. Heavy.com also framed it as Ruffy teasing a UFC return. For now the announcement belongs to Ruffy and the matchmakers, and nobody else has put a name on it.

Ruffy sits at No. 10 at 155 pounds in the latest UFC Meta Rankings, which were updated this week after UFC Vegas 122. That puts him one spot behind Mateusz Gamrot and one ahead of Tom Nolan, in a stretch of the division where a single good night moves you several rungs. His most recent assignment was a heavy one. In September he stepped in to fight Arman Tsarukyan, who holds the No. 2 spot behind Ilia Topuria. Taking short-notice work against one of the best wrestlers at the weight tells you something about how Ruffy and his team view his place in the division.

That September booking had ripple effects elsewhere. Diego Lopes told MMA Fighting that the UFC called to offer him Charles Oliveira for the BMF title shortly after Ruffy stepped in against Tsarukyan. Lopes and Oliveira now headline UFC 335 on Dec. 12 in Las Vegas, the promotion’s last numbered card of 2026. Before that, the UFC had considered Lopes against Benoit Saint Denis for UFC 344 at Madison Square Garden. The top of this division has been shuffled hard for months, and Ruffy has been part of that shuffling.

Where he could land

The most interesting thread runs through Australia. Championship Rounds reported Sunday that Quillan Salkilld, ranked sixth in the Meta Rankings, is targeting a February return in Sydney. Polymarket’s odds for Salkilld’s next opponent listed Saint Denis as the clear favorite at 43%, Rafael Fiziev at 17% and Ruffy at 15%. These are betting market numbers and not reporting, so treat them as a crowd’s guess. Still, Ruffy is in that conversation two days before he teased his own news, and the timing will make people connect the dots whether or not the dots connect.

The title picture adds urgency. Justin Gaethje holds the belt but will not defend it in 2026, and Lopes noted there is a chance Gaethje retires without ever defending. Contenders like Oliveira, Tsarukyan and Topuria are either booked or circling one another. That leaves the 6-through-12 range of the rankings to sort itself out on its own, and Ruffy is right in the middle of it.

My take: if the news is Salkilld in Sydney, that’s a ranked fight with real stakes, and it would tell us far more about Ruffy than another matchup against someone outside the top 15. Fiziev at No. 12 would also be a fair test. A man who took the Tsarukyan call in September has earned a ranked name next, and anything less would waste the goodwill he banked by saying yes. Watch his account, because he’s clearly the one who plans to break it.
