Marc-Andre Barriault stopped Kyle Daukaus by TKO at 4:28 of Round 1 on Saturday night at Rogers Place, according to MMA Fighting’s UFC Edmonton results. The middleweight fight ended 32 seconds before the horn, in a round many people expected to belong to the grappler.
The reaction came fast. The r/MMA spoiler thread was up before Gilbert Burns posted on X, where he wrote: “Wow what a finish congrats to my guy @PowerBarriault #UFCEdmonton.” A former welterweight title challenger calling you “my guy” in public is a nice way to end a Saturday at work.
The pick that went sideways
This one played out almost exactly opposite to MMA Fighting’s Saturday morning preview. That piece took Daukaus and laid out a specific plan. He would throw hands early, get to his grappling and choke Barriault out to close the first round. The timing was close. The finish went the other way.

The same preview gave Barriault a fair description. He was once a promising prospect out of Canada’s TKO MMA promotion, the contender run never quite came together, and he settled into life as a heavy-handed veteran who refuses to quit. He came into Edmonton with three straight performance bonuses, so whatever the matchmakers expected, they knew Barriault would bring violence. The preview flagged his grappling defense as the big test. He passed it the old-fashioned way, by ending the fight before it turned into a jiu-jitsu clinic.
Both men had already gotten through a dramatic Friday. Barriault weighed in at 185 pounds. Daukaus came in at 186 after a scare early in the second hour of the weigh-in window, when he stripped down and stepped on the scale behind a box, MMA Fighting reported. All 26 fighters on the card made weight.
Rough stretch for Daukaus
Daukaus arrived off the biggest night of his career, which was also a short one. At UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House on June 14, Bo Nickal finished him in the first round. Edmonton was supposed to put him back among the middleweight grinders where he’s comfortable. He has now been stopped in the first round in back-to-back fights. That’s a tough four months for a guy whose whole game depends on dragging fights into deep water.
The division around him keeps moving too. Nickal said at a Vivek Ramaswamy rally in Ohio on Thursday that his fight with Joe Pyfer has been pulled from UFC 335 and moved to a UFC Cleveland main event in February, with no exact date announced yet. No next opponent has been announced for Barriault or Daukaus.
My take: matchmakers love building cards around Barriault for this exact reason. He shows up, he swings, and he makes analysts who picked against him look silly on the way to the bonus line. He isn’t climbing toward a title, and the fans don’t need him to. Book him against another tough middleweight who wants a fight. Just don’t count on a smart preview writer to pick against him again any time soon.
