Makoto Shinryu Tags Jose Torres While Hinting He Might Miss RIZIN New Year's Eve

Hours after the Torres post, the RIZIN standout followed up by calling an unnamed target a contradictory fraud and telling them to stay out of his business entirely.

Makoto Shinryu may not be on RIZIN’s New Year’s Eve card, and he wanted Jose Torres to know about it.

On Saturday morning (09:05 GMT, Oct. 10), the RIZIN standout posted on X: “大晦日僕が出る幕ないかもですね、、” He tagged @ShortyTorresMMA, Torres’s handle, and attached a link. Roughly translated, Shinryu was saying there might be no place for him on the Dec. 31 show. The trailing double comma reads like a shrug.

The shrug didn’t last. About six and a half hours later, at 15:38 GMT, Shinryu posted again, and this time the tone was a lot less polite:

“俺はずっと不快だけどな お前矛盾してんだよ 最初から最後まで都合良いことしか言わない詐欺師が 負けたらじゃなくて最初から関わってくんな雑魚”

In plain English, and this is my translation without quotation marks, Shinryu said he has been uncomfortable the whole time. He told his target they contradict themselves and called them a fraud who only says what suits them from start to finish. He closed by telling them to stay away from him from the very beginning rather than only after a loss, and capped it with 雑魚, which is Japanese slang for a small fry or a scrub.

The second post doesn’t name anyone. It came the same day as the Torres tag, and the obvious read is that the two are connected, but Shinryu didn’t spell out who the fraud is or what the contradiction was. Neither post explains why he might be off the New Year’s Eve card. If there’s a negotiation story behind this, it hasn’t been made public.

Torres, for his part, is coming off a win. The UFC veteran stopped Wagner Noronha by TKO at Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA, according to MMA Junkie’s weekly roundup of UFC vets on the regional scene, which ran on Yahoo Sports on Oct. 9. That same roundup also noted another name with a RIZIN connection, Yoshinori Horie, scoring a TKO over Sho Patrick Usami at RIZIN LANDMARK 16.

RIZIN hasn’t announced anything about Shinryu’s status for Dec. 31, and Torres hadn’t publicly responded in the source material available at publication.

My take: I can’t price a fight that doesn’t exist, and right now that’s exactly what this is. What I can tell you is that a fighter publicly tagging a specific opponent while saying he’s probably not on the card is a strange way to sit out a show. Guys who have actually given up on a matchup usually go quiet. Guys who post twice in one day, the second time calling somebody a scrub, are often still very much in the conversation, just not happy with the terms. I’ve lost enough money on “he’s definitely out” to know better than to bet on it. Watch RIZIN’s next card announcement for New Year’s Eve, and watch Torres’s account, because the second shoe here usually drops from the other guy’s phone.
