Lerone Murphy Wants One Rule for Every Featherweight After Volkanovski's UFC 333 Win

The Manchester contender says a win over a top-five opponent should be the price of a title shot, while the 38-year-old champion is talking about Justin Gaethje.

Lerone Murphy has a simple ask for the UFC featherweight title queue, and he made it two days after Alexander Volkanovski defended his belt at UFC 333. According to reports from MiddleEasy and MMA Sucka on Monday, Murphy questioned the division’s title-shot criteria and argued that every contender should be held to the same standard: beat someone in the top five before you get a crack at the champion. The reports don’t make clear whether he named any specific fighter.

Murphy carries a 17-1-1 record and sits No. 10 in the Knockout Daily featherweight rankings. He fights out of Manchester Top Team, and he last competed on March 21, 2026. His path to this point runs through Old Trafford, where he grew up, and through a Fallowfield street in May 2013, where a gunman hit him with three bullets as he left a barber shop. He still has a sliver of one lodged in his tongue. His UFC career opened with a split draw against Zubaira Tukhugov at UFC 242 in 2019, and he has spent the years since building a résumé one fight at a time, including a short-notice knockout of Makwan Amirkhani at UFC 267.

The timing matters. On October 24, Volkanovski (29-4) finished Movsar Evloev in the second round to keep the title at 38. He’s already the oldest man to win the featherweight belt and now the oldest to defend it. Petr Yan also won on the card, and the two posed for a photo together afterward.

The complication for anyone lining up behind the champion is that Volkanovski may not be thinking about featherweight at all. Right after the Evloev win, he floated a move up to face Justin Gaethje as a farewell fight.

“That’s something I’d retire for. If they want to give me that opportunity, win or lose I’d retire,” Volkanovski said, per Championship Rounds. He added that he believed it could happen without stalling anyone: “I don’t want to hold divisions up, but I believe we could do this and not hold the divisions up.”

If the UFC grants Volkanovski that Gaethje fight, the featherweight picture gets messier, and that’s exactly when matchmaking standards stop being abstract. Murphy’s argument is a fair one to raise from No. 10, but it also sets the terms for his own next booking. If a top-five win is the price of admission, the cleanest way for him to win the debate is to go get one.
