Jorge Masvidal Took Ben Askren to Lunch, and It's Episode One of His New Show

Masvidal's new series, Super Necessary, opens with him sitting down across from the man he once fought, framed around the anniversary of their bout.

Jorge Masvidal has a new series, and he picked a loaded first guest. A video billed as Masvidal having lunch with Ben Askren five years after their fight, labeled as the first episode of Super Necessary, landed on Reddit’s r/MMA early Monday, October 19, 2026. It puts the two men at the same table, this time with silverware between them instead of a referee.

The title does most of the selling. It frames the meal around the anniversary of their fight and marks it as the opening installment of something Masvidal is calling Super Necessary. The post, shared by user ZombiesTMS, came without a write-up. Whatever the two said to each other over lunch lives in the episode itself and hasn’t been transcribed or reported anywhere yet. So anyone hoping for a juicy pull quote about that night in the cage will have to press play.

Masvidal has been in a talkative mood lately. In a clip posted to X by Dovy (@DovySimuMMA) on Sunday night, he was asked about Jose Aldo fighting Islam or Khabib, as the post put it, and he didn’t hedge at all: “The only guy I would send in there to fight them is Aldo. He would probably beat them all.” That’s a big statement about a featherweight great. It’s also the kind of line that keeps Masvidal in the conversation while he isn’t competing.

He’s been busy on the business side too. A recent EssentiallySports report on fighter movement out of BKFC identified Masvidal as a former UFC fighter who now runs Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA. It pointed to former multi-division BKFC champion Luis Palomino as one of its recruits. Palomino moved into mixed martial arts under the Gamebred banner after losing to Austin Trout at BKFC 85 on December 5, 2025. Promoting, podcasting, a lunch series. Masvidal’s post-UFC life now has several lanes running at once.

Askren’s side of things isn’t covered in the material available so far. There’s no word on what he’s doing now, and nothing on whether he’ll show up in future episodes or this was a one-time sit-down to launch the show.

My take: this is a smart first episode, and I’ll be watching for the small stuff. I want to know who reaches for the check, and whether either of them can tell the story of that fight without smirking. Rivalries built on trash talk usually have more respect underneath than the promos ever let on. Lunch is a good place to find out. Super Necessary Ep. 2 will tell us whether Masvidal has more guests like this lined up, or whether he spent his best booking on the opener.
