Jon Jones Says He Probably Won't Fight Again, Then Leaves One Door Cracked

Answering a fan on X, Jones said he's still getting drug tested, and that one detail keeps the comeback talk breathing.

Jon Jones says he’s probably done fighting. Probably.

A fan on X asked him flatly early Saturday whether he’s fighting again, and Jones answered: “More than likely, I won’t fight again, but as of right now I’m still getting drug tested.” He followed it with a line built for screenshots: “Leaving doors open, you never know what the future holds.”

That second half matters. Guys who are fully, permanently finished don’t usually keep opening the door for the testers. Jones is still doing it, and he said so himself. He didn’t wrap it in a press release or a cryptic emoji. He answered a random reply on a Saturday morning.

There’s no fight booked. His post names no opponent and gives no timeline. All he’s offered is a “more than likely” with an asterisk attached.

A busy week for Bones

Jones has been all over the timeline the past few days, and very little of it involved training.

The Colby Covington feud flared up again. MMA Fighting reported that Covington told Gable Steveson to ditch Jones, calling him a “terrible human being,” and that Jones responded. The account Spinnin Backfist summed it up as the annual Jones vs. Covington beef starting again, which is about right. You could set a calendar by it.

Then came the pizza. Championship Rounds posted a clip of Jones grinding through a pizza eating challenge and calling for backup from his oldest rival: “I’ve never wanted to see Daniel Cormier more than I want to see him right now. Tag in brother.” Years of real animosity between those two, and it took a stack of pizza to get Jones asking for DC by name.

The record still does the talking when people argue about him. Gaston Reyno ran a poll on X this week asking which mark is harder to get, Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 in boxing or Jones’s 28-1 in MMA. That’s the company he keeps in these debates, and it’s a big reason any hint of a return gets treated like breaking news.

The take

I like fighters who answer questions straight, and “more than likely, I won’t fight again” is about as straight as Jones has been about his future in a long time. Credit to him for that. The drug testing line is the tell, though. Nobody keeps peeing in a cup for fun, and a man who wanted the door shut would have shut it. Until Jones pulls himself out of the testing pool, treat this as a retirement written in pencil, from a guy whose biggest public battle this week was against a pizza.
