Ismael Bonfim Missed Weight by 7.5 Pounds and Francisco Prado Made Him Pay in Round 1

The 24-year-old Argentine snapped a four-fight losing streak at 4:23 of the first round, then called out Drew Dober for December.

Francisco Prado needed a win badly, and he got the biggest one of his UFC career Saturday at UFC Vegas 122. He finished Ismael Bonfim with ground and pound at 4:23 of Round 1 inside the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. The UFC’s official result lists it as a KO (strikes), and most outlets are calling it a TKO. Either way, the referee waved it off while Bonfim was turtled up and eating left hands.

The setup was ugly for Bonfim before anyone threw a punch. He missed the lightweight limit by 7.5 pounds on Friday and forfeited 25% of his purse, according to MMA Mania. Prado, who was dropping down from welterweight for this one, took the fight anyway. Then he put on 35 pounds in the 24 hours after weigh-ins, per MMA Mania. That’s the kind of rehydration number that makes you squint at the scale and then nod at the strategy.

The fight itself wasn’t a one-way street from the bell. Cageside Press noted Bonfim had his moments early, working his jab, chopping at the calf and landing a clean right hook as Prado tried to close the distance. Prado kept walking through it. He found a left hook, shot for the takedown and went to work from top position. Bonfim got up twice. The second time, Prado picked him up and slammed him back down, and the rest was a matter of how long the referee wanted to watch.

The numbers

Prado moves to 13-5 overall and 2-5 in the UFC. It was his first win since July 2023 and his second inside the octagon, and it ended a four-fight skid that had put him in a bad spot despite being only 24. Bonfim drops to 20-8 overall and 2-5 in the promotion. He came in on a three-fight losing streak, so this makes four in a row, plus a 7.5-pound miss. Cageside Press openly wondered whether he’d still have a UFC job by Monday. That’s the outlet’s speculation, and the UFC hasn’t said anything on it, but it’s a fair thing to wonder.

Prado didn’t waste the microphone. Speaking to Michael Bisping in his post-fight interview, he said that’s how he always likes to fight, moving forward, and he asked for a December fight with Drew Dober, who he called his twin and his brother, so he can stay active. He also thanked the UFC. Dober is the all-time knockout leader at 155 pounds, as MMA Junkie pointed out, which makes it a pretty bold first ask for a guy who just got his second UFC win. In a separate clip posted by @UFCNews, Prado added, “I did my job... I think that is the nature of the fighter.”

Quick take

I’d pump the brakes a little. Prado beat a guy on a three-fight slide who showed up 7.5 pounds heavy, and from where I sit that tells you more about Bonfim’s week than about Prado’s ceiling. What I did like was his willingness to eat calf kicks to get inside, and the chain wrestling after Bonfim stood up. That’s a real path to victory at lightweight, and it’s repeatable. Calling out Dober right away is a big swing. A December date against somebody in the middle of the division makes more sense to me, because Prado is still 2-5 in the UFC, and I’d want to see him do this again against an opponent who made weight before I treat it as a trend.
