Ian Machado Garry Gets Yaroslav Amosov Next After Falling Short Against Makhachev

Two months after losing his title shot to Islam Makhachev at UFC 330, Garry has a dangerous new name on his calendar at UFC 335.

Ian Machado Garry has his next fight. MMA Sucka reported that the welterweight contender will face Yaroslav Amosov at UFC 335. The first report confirmed only the pairing and the event. It gave no date and didn’t say where the fight sits on the card.

This is Garry’s first booking since he came up short against Islam Makhachev at UFC 330 in August 2026. That was Makhachev’s first defense of the 170-pound belt. He took the title from Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in November 2025, which also made him a two-division UFC champion. Garry earned the shot partly by beating former champ Belal Muhammad. That win is one of three straight losses for Muhammad (24-6, 1NC), who also fell to Della Maddalena and Gabriel Bonfim.

Where the Division Stands

Garry is coming back into a crowded title picture. Carlos Prates is ranked No. 1 at welterweight after three straight knockouts over Geoff Neal, Leon Edwards and Della Maddalena. The Della Maddalena finish came in May in Perth, where Prates did a lot of his damage with knees. That fight moved him past undefeated contender Michael Morales for the next shot.

The Makhachev vs. Prates fight hasn’t come together yet. The UFC had reportedly been aiming for January 30, 2027, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto as the headliner of UFC 336. Brazilian outlet AG Fight reported first that the plan had changed, and Ariel Helwani confirmed it.

“That was originally the hope/plan, but I’m told the UFC is looking elsewhere now,” Helwani wrote on X on October 23. “Date doesn’t work for Makhachev anymore. Unclear why.”

The fight was never officially announced. Prates replied on his Instagram Stories with a clip of Nate Diaz’s famous “I’m not surprised” interview from UFC 196. Some fans have floated an interim title for Prates in Toronto. That idea is fan talk, not a UFC plan.

Further down the rankings, Mike Malott knocked out Joaquin Buckley with a knee in the UFC Edmonton main event. That win made it five straight for Malott and put him at 8-1 in the UFC. He’s ranked No. 10, and Muhammad, ranked No. 7, said on YouTube he’d take the fight. Malott is widely expected to fight at UFC 336.

Quick Take

Garry made the right call by booking a fight instead of waiting. Nobody knows when Makhachev will fight again, and Prates is first in line whenever that happens. Sitting out would only give Morales and Malott time to pass him. A clear win over Amosov keeps Garry relevant while the title picture sorts itself out. A slow, careful decision might not do the same, because Makhachev already beat him once and the matchmakers will remember that. Garry needs to win in a way people talk about. Once UFC 335 gets a date, that becomes the most important thing to know about this fight.
